    Pocono Helicopter Crash Investigation Underway


    What: ACS Helicopter LLC Bell 407 helicopter
    Where: Mount Pocono
    When: Oct 11, 2012
    Who: Two fatalities, one injury
    Why: The Tuesday wreck piloted by a full time American Airlines pilot (part time with ACS Helicopter LLC) was discovered at 2:30 a.m. wednesday. The helicopter encountered bad weather as it passed through northern Monroe County. Pocono Mountains Municipal Airport is not equipped for receiving distress calls.

    The helicopter was found on its right side, leaking fluids, with broken rotor and tail.

    Fatalities of the crash were Pilot William Ellsworth, 52, of Califon, N.J., and passenger Tighe Sullivan, 51, of Darien, Conn.

    Florida Weather Blasts Airshow, Tornadoes Toy with planes

    What: Lakeland Linder Regional 2011 Sun n’ Fun fly-in and exposition
    Where: Central Florida
    When: March 31 2011
    Who: Multiple injuries, no fatalities
    Why: A tornado disrupted a central Florida airshow, although reports that a hanger collapsed on spectators is false. Seven people reported injuries but there were no fatalities. Heavy winds, damaging rain, fallen trees, and alot of wrecked planes. The airshow is planning on reopening Friday. You have to give them credit for that.

    And elsewhere in Florida, the storm caused more problems. At Cape Canaveral exercises were put on hold while the storm passed through.

    September 14–The September/October 2010 issue of FAA Safety Briefing, which focuses on proficiency and its absolute importance for pilots and aviation maintenance technicians, also includes a must-read article for pilots. FAA’s Paul Greer writes about the complicated subject of receiving compensation for your flying. He says, “Flying and getting paid for it has been a dream that most pilots have had at one time or another. It’s been done by generations of pilots, but it’s also an area ripe with opportunities for new (and even older) pilots to run afoul of the regulations.” Read all about it on page 12 of the September/October 2010 issue.

    FAA Announces $10 Million Grant to Danville Regional Airport

    Washington, D.C. – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) today announced a $10 million grant for a runway project at Danville Regional Airport in Danville, Va.

    “One of our key priorities is to ensure that our nation’s airports are properly maintained,” U.S. Transportation Ray LaHood said. “This grant will ensure that the Danville Regional Airport continues to operate safely.”

    The grant will fund the rehabilitation of Runway 2/20. Additional safety benefits include new runway markings and signage for better pilot awareness, grooves in the runway to give aircraft greater traction in wet conditions, new runway edge lighting, and improvements to the runway safety area.
    Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said, “The Danville Regional Airport and its users will benefit from these important safety enhancements for years to come.”

    Aircraft will use the crosswind runway, Runway13/31, during the reconstruction of Runway 2/20. Project construction is expected to begin in September 2012 and completed in November 2013.

    The Airport Improvement Program (AIP) provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity, and environmental stewardship of our airports. More than 3,300 airports are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations, and general aviation activities throughout the nation.

    Primera Air Nordic Plane Overruns Runway in Iceland

    Primera Air Nordic flight 6F-108 overran the end of the runway at Keflavik International Airport, Iceland, on April 28th.

    The incident happened after the Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Alicante, Spain, landed during heavy snowfall.

    There were 137 people aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

    The incident is being investigated.

    United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Arkansas

    United Airlines flight 4340 had to divert for an emergency landing in Little Rock, Arkansas, on April 2nd.

    The plane en-route from Houston, Texas, to Columbus, Ohio, was diverted due to problems with the electronic equipment on-board.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.
