What: motorized hang glider Where: off Piedmont Road, Anderson County S.C. When: Thursday night Who: pilot Andy Walls, 20 Why: While attempting to land, the glider hit a stand of trees. Pilot suffered a broken back, a broken leg, fractures to his face and burns over 14 percent of his body and is recuperating in Greenville Memorial Hospital.

What: 250 lb single-engine true Ultralight aircraft Where: Desoto County soybean field near the intersection of Stateline and Center Hill Roads. When: 10/2/09 Who: 52 year-old Louis Bassie of Byhalia Mississippi Why: As he was coming in for a landing, Bassie’s plane took a nose-dive, spiraled out-of-control and crashed. Bassie had a pilot’s license, worked as a crop-duster, and had served in the military, but it does not take a license to fly a home built kit plane.
Federal authorities will not be investigating the crash of an unlicensed plane.

What: Beech 18 (N18R) Where: near Opa-Locka Airport, Miami Gardens Florida When: May 2, 2010 Who: pilot Harry Trauffer Why: Right after takeoff, the pilot of the twin engine Beechcraft 18 cargo plane that was carrying household goods to the Bahamas radioed he was going down, before he clipped trees, crashed through a fence and 2 cars and into a residential yard. Neighbors were at home at the time of the crash, and witnessed it.
More than 90 Miami-Dade firefighters were on the scene. Although we saw reports that the fire only caused smoke damage to the exterior of the home, and that it did not strike the building, it is clear in the video that the house was breached by the plane, and there were several areas of the house that were on fire. The family is staying elsewhere and no one in the house was injured.

The pilot who was killed in the crash was 64 year old Harry Trauffer, who regularly flew clothing, bedding and auto parts to the Bahamas.

What: Policía Federal Rockwell-Gulfstream 695 Jetprop Commander 980 Where: El Refugio en el Municipio de Acatic, Mexico When: Feb 21, 2012, 21:00 pm Who: 3 aboard, 3 fatalities Why: In the town of Refugio Padrone, the Jetprop Commander 980 crashed. The names of the three victims have not been released.
State Unit of Civil Protection and Fire Jalisco (UEPCBJ), the Attorney General of the State (PGJE) are investigating.

What: Korean Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83 en route from Seoul to Pohang Where: Pohang When: March 15, 1999 Who: 6 crew and 150 passengers Why: On March 15, a Korean Air Flight 1533 (McDonnell Douglas MD-83 #HL7570) from Seoul to Pohang departed for Pohang. Weather at Pohang was poor with degraded visibility and gusty 25 knot winds. The pilot failed at the first attempt to land. After the second approach the plane touched down, but overran the runway. The aircraft skidded through 10 antennas, a reinforced barbed wire fence and came to rest against an embankment. The landing snapped the fuselage in half. Damage– Complete destruction of air frame, Injuries– multiple. 6 crew and 150 passengers, no deaths.
