    Two Killed as Biplane Crashes During Air Show in Russia

    A biplane crashed in Balashikha, Russia, on September 2nd.

    The An-2 biplane was participating in an air show when it went down.

    The plane was carrying two people at the time; both of them were killed in the crash.

    The cause of crash is being investigated.

    Plane Lands in Donetsk Fog and Fire, Four Fatalities

    On Feb 13, 2013, a South Airlines An-23 en route from Odessa to Donetsk landed short of the runway in heavy fog, flipped over and caught fire.

    There were thirty-nine survivors who managed to evacuate. Four people were confirmed dead. About a dozen people were injured.

    There were forty-five passengers and crew. The flight had been chartered for soccer fans going to the UEFA Champions League game between Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund. The flight manifest has not yet been released.

    Update: According to one source, the An-24RV was built in 1973. In 2009, it had 50,100 hours. Passengers were fans, including men and women and one boy; 36 passengers and 8 crew though these makeup of numbers vary according to the source. Another source says 4 crew.

    The gears reportedly broke into three on touchdown on soft ground.

    Air Canada Airbus Engine Surge

    What: Air Canada Airbus A330-300 en route from Calgary to London
    Where: Calgary
    When: Jul 6th 2010
    Why: On the runway, the pilot rejected takeoff because of an engine surge. The passengers were returned to the gate, and the plane taken for inspection. Passengers were provided an alternative Boeing 767-300 to complete the flight.

    Lufthansa Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Cologne

    Lufthansa flight GEC-8332 had to make an emergency landing in Cologne, Germany, on December 17th.

    The plane heading from Frankfurt, Germany, to John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, was diverted after the crew noticed an engine issue.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Newfoundland Cougar 491 Crash: Unanswered

    Families and the only survivor of the 2009 Sikorsky crash have petitioned Transport Minister Chuck Stahl to take action. Transport Canada did not enforce certification requirements, leading to sixteen factors that in their turn lead to the crash. Two of three titanium studs broke off the oil filter assembly.

    The helicopter’s design is to be able to continue flying for thirty minutes after the gearbox runs dry.

    The last conversations between air traffic controllers and the Sikorsky’s pilots, Capt. Matt Davis, 34, of St. John’s, and First Officer Tim Lanouette, 48, Comox, B.C., were released by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

    Chartered Flight Crashes in Paraná Brazil


    What: Táxi Aéreo Hercules Piper PA-31T2 Cheyenne II XL
    Where: Almirante Tamandaré, Paraná Brazil
    When: Nov 6, 2012
    Who: 4 aboard, 4 fatalities
    Why: The Táxi Aéreo Hercules Piper left Dourados for the Bacacheri Airport, in Curitiba with the pilot, copilot and two passengers. Táxi Aéreo operates out of Bacacheri Airport. The flight was chartered for Brinks and was carrying money.

    One security personnel named Wilmar survived the crash and was taken to Hospital do Trabalhador where he later died.

    The plane crashed fifteen miles short of its destination.

    Seripa (Serviço Regional de Investigação e Prevenção de Acidentes Aeronáuticos) is investigating. Currently no cause for the accident has been released.
