Wake Turbulence Found Guilty
Preliminary investigation of the Indian Air Force Lockheed C-130J-30 Super Hercules that crashed on Friday March 28, 2014, killing five, indicates that the accident may have been the result of wake turbulence. The Hercules that crashed 72 miles from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh was in a twoship formation on a training mission when it flew into the wake turbulence of the lead aircraft. Because of the low altitude (300 feet), the crew could not establish control in order to avert the crash.
The mission was flying from Agra-Kheria Air Force Station to Gwalior Airport, India.
Although the findings reportedly rule out “technical error,” incidents resulting from wake turbulence (i.e. composed of wingtip vortices and jet wash) are generally considered pilot error. Jet wash gases from engines dissipate quickly, but vortices from the wings can last three minutes.
Although most incidents resulting from a plane flying in another’s wake turbulence are reported in takeoff and landing situations at airstrips, it is also a hazard in formation flying, so that planes in the far position must concentrate on staying on or above leader’s glide path. Vortices sink at a rate of 90 to 150 meters/minute
The ICAO has separation minima standards for take-off and landing.

Vintage Plane Crashes in San Luis Obispo County
On Jan 2, 2013, a Luscombe 8A Silvaire crashed in Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation area, a park in San Luis Obispo County. State Park rangers and Five Cities Fire Authority arrived on the scene.
The pilot’s name, Glen Philip Ray, was released Thursday along with his cause of death: sharp force trauma injuries.
The only one aboard the vintage plane (circa 1937) was the pilot. A memorial celebrating Ray is scheduled on Jan. 13 at noon at Art Craft Paint in Santa Maria.
The pilot, who is a former marine, flew commercial cargo planes, restored planes and took side jobs working on various aircraft. He owned his plane but on the ground, instead of a car, he mostly got around by bike.
The NTSB investigator handling this accident is Howard Plagens. The investigation is expected to take a year, although a preliminary report will probably be available in ten days.

Ultralight Plane Crash at Lowell Airport Kills a Man
An ultralight plane offered for sale crashed during its test flight at Lowell Airport, Vergennes Township, near Lowell, Michigan, at about 11:30 a.m. on August 24.Kent County sheriff’s Sgt. Russ Larson confirmed that a New Mexico man who was taking the test flight in the aircraft owned by a local resident, was killed in the crash. He was identified as Bryan Bowker, 67, of Edgewood.
Authorities said that the plane successfully took off and landed once but crashed during a second take off attempt. Jeff Ostrander, who runs a flight school at Lowell Airport, said, “He had been doing some practicing with the aircraft, taxing up and down the runway to become familiar with the ground handling characteristics…I think what probably happened is a narrow dynamic stall where in the wing is held at such angle to the wind that no longer provides normal lift and airplanes do not fly in that condition.”
The FAA is investigating the crash.
