    Cabin smoke grounds Scandinavian Airbus in Bangor Maine

    What: Scandinavian Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Newark to Copenhagen (Denmark), diverted to Bangor Maine
    Where: Bangor Maine
    When: Jun 27th 2009
    Why: Less than an hour after takeoff, the Scandinavian Airbus filled with smoke and the crew was forced to request an emergency landing. The flight landed safely in Maine. No cause could be determined for the smoke, and three hours later, while in preparation for the rescheduled flight, the smoke reappeared, and the plane was grounded again.

    update:After getting input from a passenger, we would like to note the following: “The cabin DID NOT fill with smoke… a circuit breaker blew out on one of the air circulation systems and it smelled like something might be burning.

    Gol Transportes Aereos Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Galeao International Airport

    Gol Transportes Aereos flight G3-1025 made an emergency landing at Galeao International Airport in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on January 15th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Rio de Janeiro Airport RJ Santos Dumont to Congonhas-Sao Paulo Airport, Brazil, was diverted after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Frontier Bird Strike in Denver

    What: Frontier Airlines Airbus A319-100 en route from San Francisco to Denver
    Where: Denver
    When: Mar 4th 2010
    Who: not available
    Why: While on approach to Denver, the airbus encountered a flock of birds, and multiple bird strikes ensued. The plane made a safe landing.

    The cockpit glass sustained damage.

    Air New Zealand Plane Returns to Auckland due to Hydraulic Leak

    Air New ZealandAir New Zealand flight NZ-296 had to return and make an emergency landing in Auckland, New Zealand, on August 20th.

    The Boeing 777-200 plane took off for Apia, Samoa, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew suspected a hydraulic leak.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 293 people aboard remained safe.

    Pakistan International Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Abu Dhabi

    Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-731 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on October 10th.

    The Boeing 777-300 plane heading from Karachi, Pakistan, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, was diverted due to a broken tap in the forward lavatory.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    24 Casualties in Indonesia Crash

    What: 32 year old Tentara Nasional Indonesia-AU (Air Force) Fokker 27 registration A-2703
    Where: Bandung-Husein Sastranegara International Airport, Western Indonesia
    When: 06 APR 2009 1 p.m. Monday local time
    Who: Six crew members, one trainer and 17 military skydiving students. All 24 people on board died.
    Why: While landing during a regular training flight, the plane crashed and burst into flames at 1:05 pm (0605 GMT) in Bandung, 110 kilometres (74 miles) southeast of Jakarta. No one on the ground was injured. The weather is said to have been wet; and the plane is said to have been undermaintained due to funding problems. The plane is said to have been shaking–possibly encountering a 20-knot crosswind at the time of the accident– before it crashed in an air craft hanger and burst into flames.
