    What: Egyptair Boeing 777-300 en route from New York Cairo
    Where: JFK’s runway 22R
    When: Jun 20th 2011

    Why: The Lufthansa Airbus was next and at high speed when ATC cancelled their clearance. Lufthansa subsequently rejected takeoff and slowed. Takeoff was delayed for about two hours, until after brakes were checked.

    Simultaneously, the Egyptair Boeing was taxiing for departure and holding, but missed their turn and accidentally turned on to runway 22. The Egyptair flight vacated the runway as directed. The flight took off 75 minutes later.

    THY Turkish Airlines Plane Returns to Turkey after Lightning Strike

    THY Turkish Airlines flight TK-537 had to return and make an emergency landing at Istanbul Atatürk Airport, Turkey, on April 17.

    The Boeing 737-900 flying to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, had to return due to a lightning strike.

    The plane landed safely.

    No injuries were reported.

    Air New Zealand Flight Diverts to Christchurch After Lightning Strike

    Air New Zealand flight NZ-605 made an emergency landing in Christchurch, New Zealand, on May 20th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane heading from Wellington to Queenstown, New Zealand, was diverted due to a lightning strike.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    What: TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A320-200 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Buenos Aires Argentina
    Where: Porto Alegre
    When: Dec 19th 2009
    Who: 149 passengers
    Why: While en route, the left engine developed problems and the crew shut it down. The crew diverted the plane to Porto Alegre and made an safe landing.

    Thomson Airways Boeing Grounded after Bird Strike

    A Thomson Airways Boeing 787-8 sustained a bird strike on a Manchester—Cardiff—Shannon flight on the Cardiff-Shannon leg.

    On taking off from Cardiff, the bird strike occurred. The pilot reported that all systems appeared operational. Pilots continued to Shannon and made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.

    On the ground, the flight did not need to be towed but continued under its own power.

    Maintenance did confirm evidence of damage in the jet’s right side engine. The training flight was cancelled and crews worked on the damaged engine.

    This is listed as a training flight of a recently delivered jet.

    Allegiant Jet Makes Emergency Landing at Chicago Rockford Airport

    AllegiantAllegiant Air flight 8503 had to make an emergency landing at Chicago Rockford International Airport in Rockford, Illinois, on April 8.

    The plane took off from South Bend, Indiana and was heading to Wendover, Utah when the pilot reported an oil filter malfunction. FAA spokesperson Tony Molinaro confirmed that the plane made an uneventful emergency landing as a precaution.

    The plane was a charter for the Resorts at Wendover and was carrying around 115 people at the time.

    The passengers were accommodated in local hotels and were transported back to South Bend next day.
