Why: When his landing gear failed, the pilot of a WW2-era Spitfire (replica) circled the airport for half an hour then made a forced belly landing on grass at Whanganui Airport in New Zealand. The plane sustained some damage. THe pilot did not.

Cropdusting Chopper Crash in S. Africa
On Jan 18, 2013, a private crop dusting Bell 47 helicopter near Dunstan Farrell TB hospital in Hibberdene S. Africa developed an engine problem.A witness says the pilot struck a tree while spraying a field of ground nuts.
The ambulance company received the call at 9:00 a.m.
The pilot managed to land in a sugar cane field before the helicopter caught fire. The pilot escaped by pushing out the glass, and suffered minor injuries but the helicopter was a total loss. He was hospitalized. There wasn’t much more than the tail left remaining of the cropduster.

GETJET Airlines flight GJT-101 made an emergency landing in Vilnius, Lithuania, on November 25th.The Boeing 737-400 plane took off for Hurghada, Egypt, but had to turn back after the crew received indication of a landing gear problem.
The plane landed back safely. All one hundred and sixty people aboard remained unharmed.

Aeroflot Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Moscow
Aeroflot flight SU-22 had to return and make an emergency landing in Moscow, Russia, on March 25th.The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Saint Petersburg, Russia, but had to turn back after the crew failed to retract the landing gear.

Canadair CRJ Belly Landing at LAX
A SkyWest/United Express Canadair CRJ made a belly landing at Los Angeles International Airport with the left main gear not fully extended. None of the 43 aboard reported injury. The video below shows sparks on landing, with the commentators realizing on air there were not 4 aboard but a full plane. The video has been cut so that you do not see the landing initially, but eventually they show the friction of the landing. News of the incident was released without the flight number, origin or destination.
The incident occurred at 8:23 a.m.The CRJ is a regional commuter. Passengers were able to disembark normally, without slides, and were bussed to the terminal. Emergency services were standing by.
