Why: While en route, east of Oklahoma City, the plane developed smoke in the cockpit.
The pilot made an emergency landing diverting to Oklahoma city for a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided within two hours.
The smoke was attributed to a malfunctioning windshield heating element.
A LOT Polish Airlines flight had to make an emergency landing at Scotland’s Glasgow airport at 11:35 a.m. on September 26.
The decision for emergency landing was made after the crew received an alert from the Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s fire protection system. The aircraft, carrying 260 people, was on its way from Chicago, US, to Warsaw, Poland, at the time.
The plane landed safely and no one was hurt.
An airline spokesperson Barbara Pijanowska-Kuras said, “The emergency landing of the plane was caused by a glitch in the fire protection system…There was no fire or smoke onboard.”

NTSB ASSISTS GOVERNMENT OF SOUTH KOREA IN AVIATION ACCIDENT
Washington – The NTSB is dispatching a team of investigators to assist the government of South Korea in its investigation of the crash of Asiana flight 991, a Boeing 747-400F cargo airplane.
On July 28, 2011 at about 4:12 a.m. local time, the airplane, en route from Seoul Incheon International Airport to Shanghai Pudong International Airport, People’s Republic of China, crashed into the East China Sea about 70 miles west of Jeju Island, South Korea, after the flight crew reportedly declared an emergency due to an in-flight fire. The two pilots are believed to have been killed.
The NTSB has designated air safety investigator John Lovell as the traveling U.S. Accredited Representative. Mr. Lovell will be assisted by an NTSB Operational Factors investigator and advisors from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
and Boeing.

JetBlue flight 429 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Sioux Falls Regional Airport, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on August 11th.
The aircraft carrying 151 people from Massachusetts to Sacramento, California, was mid-air when it encountered severe turbulence, prompting the plane to divert.
The plane landed uneventfully.
At least 20 passengers sustained injuries.
The injured were taken to hospital.
Atlasjet flight KK-9764 had to make an emergency landing in Istanbul, Turkey, on June 18th.
The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Tbilisi, Georgia, but had to turn back due to a lightning strike.
The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

Who: 193 passengers, 11 crew
Why: After takeoff, ATC saw flames and smoke. The flight returned to JFK. No fire was found, but a compressor stall may have occurred. The left engine was shut down and the flight returned to the airport. Another flight was scheduled departing at 8 for Moscow, for the passengers.
UPS flight 5X-2276 made an emergency landing at Raleigh–Durham International Airport, North Carolina, on December 5th.
The plane flying from Louisville, Kentucky, was on approach to RDU Airport when the crew requested emergency assistance due to an engine fire indication.
The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
