    Cessna Crash in Rome Kills 2, Burns 30 cars

    What: Cessna 402B en route from Montichiari to Rome
    Where: Ciampino, Rome, Italy
    When: Sept 7, 2012
    Who: 2 fatalities
    Why: In Rome, a Cessna has crashed in a car depot near Ciampino airport. Thirty cars sequestered by police were damaged.

    The two aboard were killed on impact. They had been intending to land at Urbe airport in Rome but impacted at 167 Via Fioranello. Alfredo Segariol and Antonio Salvoldi, 39, Brescia were in the air performing a photographic surveys for the Rossi company. After impact, the Cessna caught fire; and the fire spread to gut thirty cars at the depot. The plume of smoke was visible across the city.

    It is not yet known if the plane had mechanical trouble or ran out of fuel.

    Helicoptors: How long has this been going on?

    I was looking at the news and noticed this:

    Have we always had so many helicopter crashes or are we just hearing about them now because our information management is what it is today?

    Small Plane Crashes During Culpeper Air Fest in Virginia; Pilot Dead

    A small plane crashed near Culpeper Regional Airport in Culpeper County, Virginia, on October 12th.

    The incident happened when the pilot was doing an aerobatic act for the Culpeper Air Fest.

    The pilot was killed in the crash.

    The FAA and the NTSB are investigating.

    Birdstrike Cause of USAF Crash

    A bird strike on the HH-60G Pave Hawk at 110ft at 126mph caused the crash of a helicopter on a moonlight training mission on the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve, killing staff Sgt Afton Ponce, Capt Christopher Stover, Technical Sgt Dale Matthews and Capt Sean Ruane.

    The crew was confirmed dead at the scene. The investigation has begun, and there is a fund opened for them.

    A number of twelve pound geese struck the helicopter after the flock flew up alarmed by the noise.

    The USAF chopper was flying out of Lakenheath in Suffolk.

    Qantas Flight Diverts to Jakarta due to Low Visibility

    QantasQantas QF51 made an emergency landing at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia, on September 29.

    The plane, heading from Brisbane, Australia, to Singapore, was diverted after the pilot reported low visibility due to haze. General manager of Jakarta’s Air Traffic Service Centre, Bambang Rianto, said the pilot reported that visibility was below the safety threshold limit of 1400 meters.

    The plane landed safely.

    No one was hurt.

    Wake Turbulence Found Guilty

    aircraft.jpg__atkinson_Preliminary investigation of the Indian Air Force Lockheed C-130J-30 Super Hercules that crashed on Friday March 28, 2014, killing five, indicates that the accident may have been the result of wake turbulence.

    The Hercules that crashed 72 miles from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh was in a twoship formation on a training mission when it flew into the wake turbulence of the lead aircraft. Because of the low altitude (300 feet), the crew could not establish control in order to avert the crash.

    The mission was flying from Agra-Kheria Air Force Station to Gwalior Airport, India.

    Although the findings reportedly rule out “technical error,” incidents resulting from wake turbulence (i.e. composed of wingtip vortices and jet wash) are generally considered pilot error. Jet wash gases from engines dissipate quickly, but vortices from the wings can last three minutes.

    Although most incidents resulting from a plane flying in another’s wake turbulence are reported in takeoff and landing situations at airstrips, it is also a hazard in formation flying, so that planes in the far position must concentrate on staying on or above leader’s glide path. Vortices sink at a rate of 90 to 150 meters/minute

    The ICAO has separation minima standards for take-off and landing.
