    Helicoptors: How long has this been going on?

    I was looking at the news and noticed this:

    Paramedics die in AirCare helicopter crashThe National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the crash, which may have occurred through negligent acts, i.e. failure to properly maintain the helicopter

    Have we always had so many helicopter crashes or are we just hearing about them now because our information management is what it is today?

    Look at all of these incidents:


    Swedish helicoptor crash. This was supposed to be his birthday present. Some birthday, huh.

    Small Plane Crashes in Klamath County, OR; Two Killed

    A small plane crashed in Klamath County, Oregon, on October 1st.

    The plane, carrying two people, was heading from Klamath Falls to Medford, Oregon, when it went down in a remote, forested area.

    Both occupants of the plane were killed in the crash. The deceased were identified as Chantal Canopii, 60, and her husband Juan Canopii, 54.

    Small Plane Crashed near the Bahamas; 1 Dead, 10 Injured

    SeaA Navajo Chieftain aircraft, operated by Ferguson Air and conducting a charter flight for Southern Air, crashed near New Providence Island in the Bahamas on December 2.

    The plane took off from Governor’s Harbour in Eleuthera Island and was making an approach to the Lynden Pindling International Airport in New Providence airport when it lost power. According to the police, the pilot informed the authorities that he was facing some problems and attempted to bring the plane near shallow water before it crashed.

    A 77-year-old U.S. man was killed in the accident. His identity has not yet been disclosed.

    The other 10 people, including the pilot, were injured and were shifted to Doctors Hospital in Nassau.

    Two In One Day

    What: experimental plane
    Where: Healdsburg Municipal Airport
    When: Thursday, May 21 10:58 a.m.
    Who: Pilot
    Why: A quartering wind caused the pilot to veer off the runway and into the Funsten Ranch vineyard grape vines. Plane owner/pilot was not injured when his homebuilt crashed.

    Then…a mere six hours later…same place…

    What: low-wing, single-engine Mooney
    Where: Healdsburg Municipal Airport
    When: 4:55 p.m
    Who: pilot
    Why: Right after take-off, the Mooney went to partial power, passed a home and powerlines, then skidded on its belly into the vineyard where this Mooney also crash-landed on grapevines by the Mazzocco Winery

    Delta Emergency Landing in Detroit

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 747-400 en route from New York JFK,NY (USA) to Tokyo Narita
    Where: Churchill
    When: Jan 15th 2011
    Why: While en route, the flight developed engine trouble and diverted to Minneapolis but with more trouble, diverted their diversion to Detroit where they made an emergency landing.

    Metrojet Flight 9268 Crash: Egypt’s Investigation Committee Refers Case to Attorney General

    imagesEgypt’s independent investigation committee into the Metrojet flight 9268 crash has referred the case to the attorney general.

    The committee said on March 17th that the decision was made after they received an official report from Russia suggesting that “criminal activity” was behind the deadly crash that killed all 224 people aboard.

    The plane, heading to St. Petersburg, Russia, went down in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula on 31st October last year.
