    Who: 23 passengers and 19 crew
    Why: The Globemaster III cargo jet landed on a runway that is 3,580 feet long and 100 feet wide rather than the 11,421 feet long and 151 feet wide runway at MacDill. The nose stopped six to 10 feet from the end of the runway. It took off again later with no problem.

    Rooney Family Crash

    What: PC-12 Eagle single-engine turboprop from (to) Yampa Valley Regional Airport.
    Where: Hayden Colorado (Routt County)
    When: 01/11/2009 9:40 a.m.
    Who: 2 fatalities-William “Bill” Rooney Jr. and son William Patrick Rooney III
    Why: The Pilatus PC-12 crashed 2 miles from Hayden Colorado ten minutes after takeoff, apparently attempting to return to the airport. They had already delayed their trip home to Yorba Linda from Steamboat Springs with the intention of avoiding strong Santa Ana winds near Chino Hills.

    Pilot Killed After Small Plane Crashes in Colorado

    A small plane crashed near Parker, Colorado, on May 11th.

    Authorities said the plane went down shortly after departing from Centennial Airport.

    The pilot, who was the only one aboard, was killed in the crash.

    The plane’s engine crashed into a nearby occupied home. Fortunately, no one was injured.

    Ark. Sgt lost in the Line of Duty in Helicopter Crash


    What: Bell OH-58 helicopter
    Where: field northeast of Quitman Arkansas
    When: 1 a.m.
    Who: contract pilot, Jerry Fryar of Ozark and Sgt. Monty Carmikle. Sgt. Monty Carmikle was killed; the pilot was taken to the hospital with injuries
    Why: The helicopter crashed while on patrol looking for hunting violators. The helicopter crashed, the rotor broke off and the fuselage buckled.

    Wolf-hunting Helicopter Crashes Killing Crew

    What: Rostov ROSTO
    Where: 20 km from Naryn-Khuduk, Kalmykia Russia
    When: Feb 6 2011
    Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
    Why: At around 14:00, the crew made an emergency landing because of engine trouble and then fixed it. The helicopter was engaged in shooting wolves in the Chernozemelskiy region of Kalmykia. Shortly after liftoff, the Mi-2 helicopter crashed Saturday, killing both crew members (pilot and mechanic). The helicopter—reportedly belonging to either the “Russian Defense Sports and Technical Organization” or “Aero Club”—apparently could not keep aloft.

    American Airlines Bird Strike in Miami

    What: American Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Chicago to Miami
    Where: Miami
    When: Oct 11, 2012
    Who: 148 aboard
    Why: On landing in Miami, the plane suffered a bird strike. The bird was ingested in the engine according to Matt Miller of American Airlines. Pilots made an emergency landing with emergency services on standby.

    Passengers in the video below describe the smell of the burning bird, taking off after touching down.

    No injuries were reported on Flight 1388. 145 of those aboard were passengers.
