    Air Canada Returns to Sydney after Smoke Aboard

    What: Air Canada Boeing 777 en route from Sydney to Toronto
    Where: Sydney
    When: Jul 27 2011
    Who: 262 passengers
    Why: The plane was en route when crew members smelled smoke in the aft galley. The pilots turned around and returned to Sydney where they made a safe landing.

    Initial reports indicated fire but no fire was found. No injures were reported, and there was no need for Emergency services who were on standby as they were landing.

    Crews are examining the plane.

    Turkish Airlines Plane Returns to Istanbul After Bird Strike

    Turkish Airlines flight TK-1911 had to return and make an emergency landing in Istanbul, Turkey, on December 17th.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for Zurich, Switzerland, but had to turn back due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

    British Airways Boeing Lands with Smoke Alert in Barcelona

    What: British Airways Boeing 757-200 en route from London Heathrow,EN to Barcelona
    Where: Barcelona
    When: Aug 2nd 2009
    Who: 176 passengers 2 pilots and 5 crew members
    Why: When smoke was detected in the cabin en route, the crew declared an emergency. The flight landed safely in Barcelona, and passengers debarked via slides. The examination of the plane as it was checked for fire which delayed the passengers retrieval of baggage, but no actual source of smoke or fire was ever detected.

    Air India Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Jaipur

    Air India flight AI-476 made an emergency landing in Jaipur, India, on April 7th.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane heading from Jodhpur to Delhi, India, was diverted after the crew received indication of a landing gear issue.

    The plane landed safely. All one hundred and fifty-eight people aboard remained unharmed.

    Woman Gives Birth On Board Qatar Airways Flight

    QatarA Qatar Airways flight had to make an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, on March 22.

    The Boeing 777, heading from Miami to Doha, had to be diverted after a passenger went into labor midair. According to Gander International Airport safety manager Brian Hicks, “Thirty minutes before the plane was preparing to land, she gave birth to a baby boy… There were two doctors on board, they assisted with the birth.”

    The plane landed uneventfully. The mother and baby were shifted to hospital.

    The flight resumed shortly afterwards.

    US Airways Flight Returned to Bluegrass Airport for Emergency Landing

    US AirwaysA US Airways flight returned to Bluegrass Airport, Lexington, Kentucky, immediately after taking off at around 12:40 p.m. on June 14 and made a safe emergency landing.

    The small plane was scheduled to go to Philadelphia with 33 people on-board.

    Airport officials said that the decision for emergency landing was made after the thrust reverser of the plane, which is used to slow the plane down during a landing, got overheated.
