Why: After taking off from De Kalb Airport, the Auman T-51 developed engine trouble, losing altitude and emitting smoke.
Pilot James L Auman landed the plane in a field, then bounced and flipped. Plane and pilot both sustained substantial damage. Auman had to be extricated, then was taken by medical chopper to St. Anthony Hospital.

Who: Andrea Sirlo
Why: “Andrea Sirlo” was arrested in the Turin airport for impersonating a pilot.
He had already flown several times as a “third pilot” in the jump seat, and had a fake uniform and resumes. The name Andrea Sirlo is a fake identity, not his real name.
CommutAir flight C5-4979 had to return and make an emergency landing at Washington Dulles International Airport, Virginia, on July 26th.
The plane took off for Norfolk, Virginia, but had to return shortly afterwards after one of the engines stopped working mid-air.
The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained uninjured.
What: Skyranger II, a home built single-engine kit plane
Where: nose down in a soybean field in York County SC in a very rural area near the Chester County line along East Chappel Road near Horse Road
When: crashed between 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Thursday
Who: 51-year-old Theodore Hargett of Rock Hill
Why: Cause is unknown. The pilot had not long owned the Skyranger and was inexperienced.
EXPLOSION AT MOSCOW’S DOMODEDOVO AIRPORT KILLS AT LEAST 10, HURTS AT LEAST 20 –
A suicide bomber has been reported to have killed 10 at a Moscow airport. Dozens are reported to have been injured. The explosion occurred in the international baggage-claim near a baggage carousel. People are being evacuated from the airport.

Where: near the Holitna River, Red Devil, Alaska

Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
Why: A red and white Piper Super Cub owned by Richard Wilmarth, crashed while apparently attempting to land on a private airstrip near the Holitna River. Wilmarth and his passenger Kenneth Mellick died in the crash.

Where: Juan Santamaria International Airport in Costa Rica’s capital city San Jose

Why: During takeoff from Liberia, the plane experienced generator failure in its left hand engine. The plane landed safely.
