    JetBlue Flight Returns to Long Beach Airport

    jetBlueJetBlue flight 1416 had to return and make an emergency landing at Long Beach Airport, California, at about 9:30 a.m. on September 18.

    According to airport spokesperson, Kerry Gerot, the plane, heading to Austin, Texas, was diverted for landing back after its second engine got overheated and the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit.

    The Airbus A320 landed uneventfully and all 142 passengers and 5 crew members exited through emergency slides.

    According to local fire department officials, 4 passengers suffered from medical issues and one of them was shifted to hospital with complaint of shortness of breath.

    Actor Jackson Rathbone was also aboard the flight along with his wife and son. He tweeted “I grabbed my son and jumped down the inflated ramp, my wife following… We left all our personal effects onboard. Who cares. We were alive.”

    Fedex Flight Returns to Milwaukee After Bird Strike

    Fedex Federal Express flight FX-2415 had to return and make an emergency landing in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on April 8th.

    The Airbus A300-600 plane took off for Appleton, Wisconsin, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed back safely. There were 2 crew members aboard at the time; both of them remained unharmed.

    Wizz Air Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Romania

    A Wizz Air flight made an emergency landing in Bucharest, Romania, on October 25th.

    The plane heading from Kutaisi, Georgia, to Warsaw, Poland, was diverted due to a bomb threat.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    The bomb threat turned out to be a false alarm.

    Southwest Emergency Landing in Long Island

    What: Southwest Airlines en route from Bradley International Airport Hartford,CT to Orlando
    Where: diverted to Long Island Islip Macarthur Airport
    When: July 26, 2009
    Who: 132 passengers and 5 crew
    Why: After take-off, the crew detected an “electrical smell” and smoke; oxygen masks were deployed, and the plane diverted to Long Island where the passengers debarked without incident, and took an alternate 737-300 to Orlando. The original plane was taken out of service for a complete inspection which determined that the electrical smell originated from the burner of a coffee maker in the back of the aircraft.

  • Emergency landing in Delhi

    What: Jet Airways en route from Delhi to Vadodara
    Where: Indira Gandhi International Airport Delhi
    When: August 2009
    Who: 63 passengers including including Vadodara MP and mayor Balkrishna Shukla.
    Why: After takeoff, the flight experienced undisclosed technical difficulties. According to passengers, the engines sounded like a train. The flight landed safely, and the passengers were upset over the uncomfortably hot flight, as well as the lack of explanation from the airline.

    However, newspapers carried the story, explaining that the problem with the plane was related to wheels that refused to retract.

    EasyJet Airbus in Emergency Landing at Gatwick Airport

    easyjetAn EasyJet flight en route from Liverpool to Naples had to divert and make an emergency landing at Gatwick airport in West Sussex, United Kingdom, at around 7:20 a.m. on August 28.

    The Airbus A320 aircraft carrying 157 passengers was diverted after crew reported smoke in the cockpit.

    According to an EasyJet spokesperson, “The plane landed safely at Gatwick and the passengers remained calm. At no point was the safety of passengers threatened…We now want to make sure we get the passengers to Naples as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, the plane is being inspected.”
