    Plane Lands in Donetsk Fog and Fire, Four Fatalities

    On Feb 13, 2013, a South Airlines An-23 en route from Odessa to Donetsk landed short of the runway in heavy fog, flipped over and caught fire.

    There were thirty-nine survivors who managed to evacuate. Four people were confirmed dead. About a dozen people were injured.

    There were forty-five passengers and crew. The flight had been chartered for soccer fans going to the UEFA Champions League game between Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund. The flight manifest has not yet been released.

    Update: According to one source, the An-24RV was built in 1973. In 2009, it had 50,100 hours. Passengers were fans, including men and women and one boy; 36 passengers and 8 crew though these makeup of numbers vary according to the source. Another source says 4 crew.

    The gears reportedly broke into three on touchdown on soft ground.

    Turkish Crash Kills Two in Aegean Sea


    What: Turkish Air Force Cessna T-37C Tweet
    Where: Aegean Sea off the coast of Güzelbahçe, Turkey
    When: July 14, 2011, noon
    Who: 2 aboard
    Why: The Turkish Airforce flight fell into the Aegean Sea, killing both the pilot and passenger. The Cessna is normally used for training. The flight took off from the Jet Base Flight Training Center but it has not been released if this was a training exercise. The pilot and passenger have not yet been recovered.

    Lion Air Robinson Helicopter Crash Kills Governer

    What: Lion Air Robinson R44 Raven II helicopter
    Where: Jael Subdivision in Barangay Iyam, south of Lucena City, Philippines
    When: MAY 17, 2010
    Who: 4 aboard the flight, and two or three on the ground including Rowena Navales (14) 7 fatalities in all.
    Why: The Lion Air helicopter had just taken off. A scant 300 feet later, the chopper swerved, the propeller stopped spinning, and the helicopter slammed into three houses in a neighborhood 70 miles south of Manila. The fire spread to five houses. There were two or three fatalities on the ground, possibly all children, in addition to those aboard the flight.

    Aboard were Quezon Gov. Rafael Nantes,his military escort Master Sergeant Alfred Dominguez, police escort Police Officer Randy Roferez, and the pilot identified as Nestor Sanchez.

    The crash is being attributed to mechanical problems.

    UTAir Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Engine Issues

    UTAir flight UT-295 had to return and make an emergency landing at Vnukovo International Airport in Moscow, Russia, on February 24th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Surgut, Russia, but had to turn back after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Who: 4 aboard, 3 fatalities
    Why: The helicopter crashed in rugged terrain near Pukerua Bay, in fog, killing 3 aboard (Flight Lieutenant Hayden Peter Madsen, pilot, 33; Officer Daniel Stephen Gregory, pilot, 28, and Corporal Benjamin Andrew Carson, helicopter crewman, 25) and injuring one.

    Hog Hunters Flipped in Chopper Bang-Up


    At 9 a m Jan 26,2013, a Hiller UH-12B helicopter crashed east of the St. Lucie-Okeechobee County line in a swamp between Okeechobee Road and Orange Avenue, west of the Adams Ranch The three men aboard,Pilot William Harward, and passengers Jonathan Strayer, 46, and Massad Ayoob, 64 were hospitalized at Raulerson Memorial Hospital.

    The helicopter had been chartered to “shoot feral hogs from a helicopter with .44 Magnum revolvers” a pastime that has been called pest eradication. A blog has released that the main rotor hit treetops, and the helicopter ended up upside down.
