Pacific Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose Crash, 1 survivor


What: Pacific Coastal Airlines Grumman Goose amphibious aircraft chartered to deliver personnel and supplies to an energy project under construction for Plutonic Power Corporation in Toba Valley. The flight left Vancouver at 10:17 a.m. for Powell River but never arrived.
Where: crashed into a hillside on Thormanby Island 56 miles Northwest of Vancouver
When: Sunday
Who: 8 aboard, 1 survivor. The badly burned survivor took approximately two hours to climb down from the crash site. Terrain and foggy weather hampered rescuers.

    Parma Plane Crash Kills World War II Veteran

    UntitledA small aircraft crashed at an air strip off Route 104 and near West Ridge Road in Parma, New York, on July 5.

    The pilot, Norman Hasman, 88, who was a World War II veteran and the only person aboard, was killed in the crash. Investigators said that Norman’s plane swerved off the air strip and flipped upside down when he was practicing ‘touch and go’ landing exercises.

    “The wind is gusting today and it was a very light plane and that may have something to do with it. Flying any aircraft has its hazards and it takes a particular skill,” said Sgt. Robert Murphy of the Monroe County Sheriff Department.

    He further said, “He was a very experienced flier. He was a veteran of World War II. He had been shot down twice during in wartime. He was a prisoner of war for several years. He loved flying despite his advanced age.”

    The FAA is investigating the cause of crash.

    P-51 Mustang Crashes in Schenectady

    What: P-51 Mustang en route from Schenectady County Airport.
    Where: GLENVILLE, N.Y in a wooded area north of the Empire State Aerosciences Museum and east of Route 50.
    When: Tuesday Sept 23
    Who: The pilot Charles Hudson, 42. was the only one on board. He is in critical condition. He was not the owner of the plane.
    Why: Prior to takeoff, the pilot had been working on the engine. The plane lost power during takeoff, veered off to the side and crashing into the trees.

    Four Killed as Small Plane Crashes in Somerset, UK

    small planeA six-seater light plane crashed near Churchinford village in Blackdown Hills, Somerset, United Kingdom, on November 14.

    The plane went down while it was heading from Surrey to Devon.

    There were four people aboard the plane, including two men and two women; all of them were killed in the crash.

    The Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) will investigate the cause of crash.

  • Nepalese Plane Crash kills 18

    What: Canadian built Twin Otter owned by Yeti Airlines
    Where: crashlanded at the mountainous Lukla airport in north-eastern Nepal in the Mount Everest region
    When: Wednesday morning
    Who: 18 people died in the crash, mostly foreign tourists from Germany and Australia: 12 Germans, including six women, four Nepalese and two Australian. The captain is the only survivor; he was airlifted to Kathmandu. There Swiss casualties reported turned out to be Australian.
    Why: Lukla airport, located 2,743 metres above sea-level has steeply-inclined runway and is considered one of the world’s most dangerous airports.

    Military Helicopter Crashes in Indonesia; 12 Killed

    A military helicopter crashed during an enemy chase mission in Poso District, Sulawesi, Indonesia, on March 20.

    The Bell 412-EP was on its mission to capture Indonesia’s most wanted militant Abu Wardah Santoso when it went down and crashed.

    At least 12 soldiers and officials aboard the helicopter lost their lives and one soldier went missing.

    The cause of the crash is under investigation.

    What: Spanish Navy Agusta-Bell 212ASW
    Where: Fond Verrettes area, about 50km from Port-Au-Prince Haiti
    When: April 16, 2010 10:30
    Who: 4 on board. No survivors.
    Why: One of a detachment of four Spanish Navy Agusta-Bell 212ASW helicopters assigned to the Spanish navy amphibious ship Castilla crashed in a sparsely populated remote
    rugged location called Mount Toro. The helicopter, which is part of an independent detachment is said not to be part of the 400+ Spanish soldiers engaged in Haiti’s recovery and reconstruction efforts, reportedly struck trees and slammed into the ground before catching fire. The rugged terrain is reportedly hampering recovery.
