Michigan Flight Victims Recovered, Amazon Exec Crashed


What: Great Lakes Air Inc Piper PA-32-260 Cherokee Six en route from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island
Where: Lake Huron shore, about three miles north of St. Ignace, northern Michigan
When: Dec 3, 2011
Who: 2 fatalities
Why: Thomas Phillips, 52, with homes in Kirkland and Mackinac Island, and Joseph Pann Jr., 29, of St. Ignace were killed in a piper crash in Michigan. From Mackinac County Airport at St. Ignace to the destination Mackinac Island Airport is 4.5 miles and should have taken six minutes, but the plane was reported missing and was later found 100 yards from shore. Search and rescue controllers were involved at 10:07 p.m after police called. No distress call was reported but the plane was tracked by the cellphone of one of the victims.

Phillips was general manager with Amazon Web Services.

    What: Air Cargo Carrier Shorts SD-360 en route from Tupelo to Houston
    Where: Houston
    When: May 17th 2012
    Who: 2 crew
    Why: After the Air Cargo Carrier landed at Houston-George Bush Intercontinental Airport, it caught on fire. Aviation Herald claims the cause of the fire was “brakes of the right main gear.”

    Emergency services responded.

    We haven’t heard if the plane made a hard or fast landing, Houston temps, or if there was some mechanical problem like a lock-up that caused the fire.

  • Sedona Crash Kills Two


    What: single-engine Piper Cherokee registered to a Texas company.
    Where: a few miles from the Sedona Airport.
    When: Thursday afternoon about 4 p.m.
    Who: 3 aboard. Pilot Rockney Herring was able to exit the plane and was then airlifted to Flagstaff Medical Center; brothers Michael Johnson and Tommy Johnson died.
    Why: The pilot said he did not know why the plane had lost power.

    Beech Crashes in Big Bear Lake


    The Beech A36 Bonanza crashed in Big Bear Lake had been cleared for landing when it crashed in Big Bear lake.

    The four people aboard were slightly injured.

    The plane lost power, and the pilot told ATC that the plane was not going to make it to the airport.

    The NTSB is investigating.

    Fuel gauge Issues Lead to Albany Emergency Diversion

    What: Delta/Pinnacle Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Detroit to Portland
    Where: Albany
    When: Jan 18th 2012
    Who: 51 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: While en route, the plane developed problems with the fuel gauge.

    Pilots diverted to Albany where they made a safe landing. The problem took two hours to repair, and the flight resumed.

    Air Blue Chided by Sindh High Court


    The Sindh High Court Issued a demand for the public release of Air Blue’s report of the crash inMargalla Hills on July 28, 2010.

    152 died in that crash in July of 2010, nearly a year and a half ago, and the report has still not been released.

    Whatever the errors were that occurred, the report should have been released by now, especially after Air Blue made several commitments to release dates of that report. Full disclosure of accident reports is really the only way to learn from the past, and prevent future incidents. Also, it is unnecessarily cruel to keep families of the victims waiting, some of whom who are engaged in lawsuits whose results won’t be determined until after the reports are released.

    Airblue’s CEO did not appear in court, even though his presence was specifically requested by the court. A lawyer, Masood A Khan, appeared in his stead and requested more time.

    Turkish Helicopter Crashes Killing a Dozen Military, Plus Civilians on the ground

    What: Turkish Army Sikorsky S-70A-28 (CH-60)
    Where: Bagrami district, Kabul
    When: Mar 16, 2012, 10:25 a.m.
    Who: 10 fatalities aboard, 2 on the ground
    Why: The Turkish (Turk Kara Ordusu Havaciligi) helicopter crashed into a house in Bagrami District. A dozen Turkish troopers aboard the helicopter were killed. The number reported as being inside the house varies from 2 (children) to a total of eight residents. The Herald Sun reported five bodies. One report says a female casualty may have been aboard the helicopter.

    The crash is attributed to a malfunction, and not to any military action.

    Grisly descriptions of the scene of the crash indicate the bodies of the military victims were decimated into parts. The bodies of two girls from but not in the multi-story brick house have been recovered. The house is described as “scorched” “a smoking hole” and with “several large holes.” A woman and a Turkish boy were injured.
