Why: On approach to Manchester, at 1300 feet the plane was struck by lightning, burning the fuselage under the cockpit window.
The first approach was aborted due (apparently) to snow on the runway. The plane circled for less than half an hour before making a safe landing.

What: Midwest Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Sharm el Sheikh Egypt to Tallinn Estonia
Where: Sharm el Sheikh
When: Jan 15th 2011
Who: 180 passengers
Why: While en route, the plane developed pressurization problems that caused passengers significant distress, including ear pain.
Pilots returned the plane to Tallinn where it made a safe landing and the pressurization problems were worked on by maintenance crews.
Air New Zealand flight NZ-514 made a safe emergency landing at Auckland Airport, New Zealand, on August 12.
The Airbus A320-200 flying from Christchurch International Airport, New Zealand, was about to land when a bird impacted it.
The plane landed safely.
No one was injured.
Saudi Arabian Airlines flight SV-753 made an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, India, on October 13th.
The plane took off for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, but had to return shortly afterwards due to technical issues.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
What: Pakistan International Airlines ATR-42-500 en route from Islamabad to Lahore

Why: While landing in Lahore in heavy rain, the plane’s right main gear collapsed, and the plane ran off the runway.
There were no injuries but the plane was damaged. Pia reported that the main gear collapsed and denied earlier reports of injury. No one was hospitalized.
Passengers disembarked via stairs on the runway shoulder and were provided transportation to the gate.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight KL-896 had to return and make an emergency landing at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Shanghai Shi, China, on May 12th.
The Boeing 777-300 flying to Amsterdam, Netherlands, had to return due to problems with one of its engines.
The plane landed safely.
All 396 people aboard remained safe.
Air Canada flight 549 made an emergency landing in Toronto, Canada, on January 29.
The plane, en-route from Newark, New Jersey, to Vancouver, Canada, was diverted after it lost cabin pressure due to a fault in an air conditioning unit.
The Airbus A319 plane landed safely. All 107 passengers aboard remained unhurt.
