KLM flight KL-1641 had to return and make an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on January 19th.
The plane took off for Florence, Italy, but had to turn back due to the failure of anti-ice systems.
The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
An Air China flight had to make an emergency landing at Richardson International Airport in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, on June 4th.
The Boeing 777-300 plane, heading from Washington D.C. to Beijing, China, was diverted due to a mechanical issue.
The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

Why: Before this flight, the plane had been delayed in Dhaka Bangladesh with an undesignated problem with an engine that delayed the prior flight for three hours.
Then, after taking off from Dubai, the plane developed engine problems.
The pilot diverted the flight to Amman Jordan, where there was a layover as the problem was handled.

What: Since Thursday, 314 passengers on two DC10 had to wait 40 hours after the (two) Biman Bangladesh Airlines DC10s developed undisclosed problems. After being cleared by immigration,they were held in the airport without food since Saturday. The airlines has been plagued with scheduling issues snowballing after one flight was grounded for hydraulic leaks and another for engine problems. Currently three Biman Bangladesh Airlines are grounded, including a DC-10, a Fokker, and a Boeing 737.
An unsubstantiated rumor is being circulated that within the airlines “a vested group…may have a hand behind [the flight delays] to realize some personal gains.”

Why: The airbus landed at Schoenefeld with gear issues and had to be towed off the runway.
What: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Baltimore,MD to Hartford,CT
Where: Baltimore
When: Mar 22nd 2012
Who: 108 aboard
Why: On takeoff from Baltimore, the flight encountered a bird.
The bird strike damaged the #1 engine which began vibrating.
Pilots returned to Baltimore and made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked on the runway, and were ported to the terminal.

What: Air Mauritius Airbus A340-300 en route from Johannesburg S Africa to Mauritius
Where: Mauritius
When: Jul 28th 2011
Who: 65 passengers, 13 crew
Why: On approach to Mauritius, the flight encountered turbulence that injured 6 crew members and one passenger.
The injured were hospitalized.
United Airlines flight UA-881 had to return and make an emergency landing at O’Hare International Airport, Chicago, Illinois, on December 8.
The Boeing 747-400, flying towards Tokyo Narita, Japan, had to return due to hydraulic problems.
The plane landed safely.
No one was injured.
