    Boeing Tests New Ka-band SATCOM Antenna System

    KENT, Wash., Jan. 27, 2011 — Boeing [NYSE: BA] announced today that it successfully conducted its first over-the-air ground test of a Ka-band satellite communications (SATCOM) phased-array antenna system that will enable wideband SATCOM on aircraft, providing increased bandwidth for networking in flight.

    This third-generation antenna system gives commercial and military aircraft operators worldwide the ability to offer communications using the growing fleet of commercial K- and Ka-band satellites. The low-profile antenna is also an option for government operators using military satellites such as the Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) system. The active phased array system uses electronically controlled beams to transmit and receive signals from a designated satellite.
    The test demonstrated the new system’s ability to support a range of applications, including file transfer and a Voice over Internet Protocol videoconference.

    “This Ka-band phased-array antenna system supports a significant increase in bandwidth with a smaller antenna than previous Ku-band antennas, while still providing the same low profile, low drag, and lower cost of installation,” said Charles Toups, vice president and general manager, Boeing Network and Tactical Systems (N&TS). “Boeing is continuing to invest in secure data-communication technologies that will improve our customers’ ability to remain networked while mobile.”

    Boeing has more than 15 years of experience designing phased array antenna systems flying on commercial and military aircraft. Boeing developed the antenna as a joint effort between N&TS, part of Boeing Defense, Space & Security, and Boeing Research & Technology, a division of Boeing Engineering, Operations & Technology.

    Boeing Begins Assembly of First 747-8 Intercontinental

    EVERETT, Wash., — Boeing announced it began assembly of the first 747-8 Intercontinental at the factory in Everett, Wash. Late this week, mechanics took the first step in major assembly for the new airplane by loading its wing panels and spars in the assembly tools. The spar is the internal support structure that runs through the full length of the wing.

    “This milestone symbolizes the dedication, focus and hard work that our team, suppliers and customers have invested in designing this wonderful airplane,” said Mo Yahyavi, vice president and general manager of the 747 program, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 747-8 Intercontinental will provide our customers with increased levels of passenger comfort, greatly improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions and noise.”

    Deutsche Lufthansa AG was the first airline to order the new, fuel-efficient passenger airplane, contracting for 20 747-8 Intercontinentals, with purchase rights for an additional 20. “We are very pleased to see that the production on the 747-8 Intercontinental has begun,” said Nico Buchholz, senior vice president, Corporate Fleet of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. “We are looking forward to welcoming the aircraft in our fleet as it is a component of Lufthansa’s strategy to modernize its fleet and increase environmental stewardship. The 747-8 shows our clear commitment to customer orientation.”

    The new 747-8 Intercontinental is stretched 18.3 feet (5.6 m) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats — 51 more than its predecessor — in a three-class configuration. GEnx-2B engines and a new wing design provide airlines a quieter, more fuel-efficient airplane. The 747-8 is 16 percent more fuel efficient and creates a 30 percent smaller noise footprint than its predecessor. The 747-8 also provides nearly equivalent trip costs and 13 percent lower seat-mile costs than the 747-400, plus 26 percent greater cargo volume.
    The 747-8 interior incorporates features from the 787 Dreamliner, including a new curved, upswept architecture that gives passengers a greater sense of space and comfort while adding more room for personal belongings. The architecture is accentuated by lighting technology that provides smooth transitions for a more restful flight.

    The 747-8, which includes the 747-8 Intercontinental and the 747-8 Freighter, was launched in November 2005. Boeing has 108 orders for the 747-8 — 32 for the 747-8 Intercontinental and 76 for the 747-8 Freighter. The first 747-8 Intercontinental is scheduled to deliver in late 2011.

    Alitalia Emergency Landing in Shannon

    What: Alitalia Boeing 767-300 en route from Rome Fiumicino to New York
    Where: Shannon Ireland
    When: Jul 22nd 2010
    Who: 198 passengers
    Why: While en route, the crew smelled smoke in the cockpit. The pilots diverted the plane to Shannon, where they made a safe landing.

    Passengers were provided accommodations, and the plane underwent inspection.

    Cathay Pacific Plane Returns to Hong Kong due to Technical Issue

    Cathay PacificCathay Pacific flight CX-379 had to return and make an emergency landing at Chek Lap Kok Hong Kong International Airport, Hong Kong, China, on April 12th.

    The Boeing 777-300 was en-route to Dusseldorf, Germany, when it had to return shortly afterwards after the crew reported some technical issue with the in-flight entertainment system.

    The plane landed uneventfully.

    All 269 passengers and 18 crew member onboard remained safe.

    The passengers were accommodated in a replacement plane.

    UPS Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Japan

    UPS flight 5X-104 had to divert for an emergency landing at New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido, Japan, on March 8th.

    The Boeing 767-300 plane heading from Anchorage, Alaska, to Osaka, Japan, was diverted after the crew needed to shut down one of the engines.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.
