Why: The pilot and adult passenger were taking their daughters to choir practice. After the cockpit began to smell of smoke, the pilot landed in the field. Just prior to landing, flames erupted from the motor. The pilot and adult passenger quickly exited with their daughters, and a few moments later, the helicopter was engulfed in flames.

Why: Earlier in March we talked about the Sikorsky that crashed while lifting an ac unit from atop the Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems warehouse in El Segundo. The injured pilot survived though he had to be extracted from the helicopter. Anthony Savedra, an employee of Excel Mechanical, pulled the pilot to safety. The helicopter capacity is 5000 pounds, and the unit that was being removed from the building was under 4500 lbs, but the helicopter apparently suffered an engine failure (the pilot said the engine when “offline”) while the operation was in progress. A witness in the video below said the helicopter made a popping noise on impact, and there was white smoke; then a few moments later, there was an explosion, and black smoke. The pilot escaped burn injuries.The crash started a fire on two floors of the warehouse but no one was injured in the fire, because the accident occurred on a Sunday. Seventy firefighters put out the blaze within forty minutes.

Fourth Qantas Flight Makes Emergency Landing in 48 Hours
A Qantas flight had to return and make an emergency landing at Hobart Airport in Tasmania, Australia, on the evening of December 9.The Melbourne-bound Boeing 717 had to turn back, just 20 minutes after taking off, after a warning system indicated a technical issue with the aircraft.
The plane landed safely and was taken for examination.
The flight was able to depart again at 7:40 p.m.
This is the 4th emergency landing of a Qantas jet within 48 hours. The airline insisted that the incidents were un-related. According to Qantas chief Alan Joyce, “We have really high reliability. We have low levels of turnbacks compared to most of the world fleets.”

Why: Observers report seeing smoke coming from the plane as it approached the runway. On landing, the plane burst into flames in the mid-section where the hull broke. The plane split in two and collapsed.The pilot and copilot have been hospitalized. No deaths are reported, but the plane is a total loss. It was carrying 80 tons of freight.
The Lufthansa press release on the crash is titled “Lufthansa Cargo plane crash in Riyadh, 27 Jul 2010.”
“According to the latest reports, a Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 freighter crashed this morning at 11.38 a.m. (local time) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The aircraft, coded Flight LH 8460, was on a flight to Riyadh from Frankfurt, Germany. The plane was piloted by a two-man crew, according to initial reports. Both pilots are being treated in hospital. On board Flight LH 8460 were 80 tonnes of freight. It is not yet known exactly what type of freight it was or which customers are affected. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. At the moment, we have no further details. We will communicate any further information immediately. Hawaiian Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Oakland
Hawaiian Airlines flight HA-43 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Oakland, California, on September 12th.The Boeing 767-300 plane heading from San Jose, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii, was diverted due to a fuel distribution problem.
The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

Flybe Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Birmingham
Flybe flight BE-793 made an emergency landing in Birmingham, England, on January 22nd.The plane flying from Glasgow, Scotland, was on final approach to Birmingham when the crew noticed an issue with the nose wheel steering and went around.
The plane subsequently landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained safe.
