Gulf & Caribbean Air Loses Oil over Cincinnati

What: Gulf & Caribbean Air Boeing 727-200 en route from Memphis,TN to Hamilton, Ontario
Where: Cincinnati
When: Dec 13th 2009
Who: 3 crew members
Why: While en route, engine 3 developed an oil pressure problem, most likely due to a leak. The right engine (3) was shut down and the plane diverted to Cincinnati where it made a safe landing.

After landing, apparently maintenance discovered no oil IN the engine, but quite a lot ON it. Not finding a current photo of this plane in Gulf & Caribbean Air colors, we have delved into history and (if we have made no errors) resurrected a photo of this plane in its former life with the photographer’s permission. If there’s a mistake, it’s ours.

    Who: 262 passengers
    Why: The plane was en route when crew members smelled smoke in the aft galley. The pilots turned around and returned to Sydney where they made a safe landing.

    Initial reports indicated fire but no fire was found. No injures were reported, and there was no need for Emergency services who were on standby as they were landing.

    Crews are examining the plane.

    Tragic Crash Kills Ontario Family

    What: Piper PA-28R-180 Cherokee Arrow en route from Kingston to Sudbury, Ontario
    Where: Devine Lake in Algonquin Park
    When: Saturday October 10
    Who: Pilot Kevin Houle, wife Lorraine Houle, granddaughter Emily and her boyfriend, Michael Rollins
    Why: It is speculated that the plane ran into weather as a distress call was heard from the plane, and the weather was rainy and icy at the time.

    The plane hit a tree and one of the wings was broken.

    The family was killed in the crash.

    The plane belonged to Kevin’s company, Tracks & Wheels Equipment Brokers. Kevin had been a pilot for a couple of years.

    Aeroflot Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Russia

    AeroflotAeroflot Airlines flight SU-1255 had to return and make an emergency landing in Naberezhnye Chelny, Russia, on November 21st.

    The plane took off for Moscow, Russia, but had turn back after the nose gear failed to fully retract.

    The plane landed back uneventfully. There were 64 passengers and 5 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

    United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing with a Cracked Windshield

    United Ailrines BoeingA United Airlines flight had to divert and make emergency landing in Indianapolis, after a crack appeared on its windshield.

    The flight 766 took off from JFK airport, New York and was on its way to San Francisco when a crack was discovered in its cockpit window. The plane was then immediately diverted to Indianapolis where it made an uneventful emergency landing on the night of April 19.

    The Boeing 757 aircraft was carrying 138 passengers, who were then taken to their destination through another plane.

    The United Airlines maintenance engineers are examining the plane.

    A Passenger from the flight posted a picture of the cracked windshield on social media, saying “United Flight 766 New York to San Francisco bird hit window. Kudos to pilots for getting us down safe.”

    Air India Flight Makes Emergency Landing in New Delhi

    airindialogoAir India Flight AI-416 made an emergency landing in New Delhi, India, on April 28th.

    The Airbus A320-200 was flying from Patna in Bihar, India, when the crew declared emergency due to a gear problem.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unhurt.

    Oops Sriwijaya Wrong Airport

    What: Sriwijaya Boeing 737-400 en route from Medan to Padang
    Where: Padang
    When: Oct 13 2012
    Who: 96 aboard
    Why: The flight was en route to Minangkabau International but ended up landing at Tabing Airport 14km apart.

    Passengers disembarked and were bussed to Minangkabau International Airport.

    There were no injuries. The cockpit-voice and flight-data recorders have been secured for the investigation and the pilot and copilot have been grounded as the situation is investigated by the Transportation Ministry.
