Fokker 100 Owned by Nigeria’s IRS Airline Crashed in Niger Republic

An IRS Airlines owned Fokker 100 crashed in the Niger Republic on the evening of May 10.

The aircraft (registration number 5NSIK) was flying back to Nigeria after going through C checks when it lost communication with the control tower near Ganla at about 7:30 p.m. and then crashed.

The plane was carrying two persons at the time of accident. Both of them survived.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had ceased the operations of IRS airlines last year after one of its aircrafts experienced hydraulic malfunctioning while landing at Kaduna airport. The airline, operating 3 Fokker 100 planes at the time then scheduled C checks for the aircrafts.

The crashed Fokker plane was the second one which underwent successful C checks. The airline, owned by a Nigerian business tycoon, Ishiaku Rabiu, was awaiting its return to resume their operations. An IRS official was quoted saying, “I have not heard about the crash before now but I know that we are waiting for this aircraft to arrive today (May 10) so that we could resume operation immediately. We already have one that had gone through C check; we are just waiting for this one. So if it has crashed it will be a great setback to us.”

According to the Acting Director-General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Benedict Adeyileka, Niger Republic officials are investigating the crash. He further said “The NCAA and the AIPB are offering assistance, so we have a team together and we are trying to contact them so that we can work together.”

    First Responders Compromise Investigation

    The first responders to the Sunday crash in India’s Naneghat Hills compromised the investigation of a crash by moving the wreckage before investigators arrived. The United Helicharters flight from Juhu to Aurangabad to Nagpur crashed in the Naneghat Hills at an altitude of 2,000 feet.

    The bodies of the deceased and the flight data recorders were also removed before the DGCA arrived.

    Two pilots and three passengers died in the twin-engine Bell 212 crash during a foggy flight. The crash occurred on Sept 29, 2013 at 8:15 a.m..

    Protocol demands that except for rescue of survivors, the wreckage not be touched until the DGCA has arrived.

    Police and fire teams removed the bodies of captain Anshu Kumar Matta, captain Surendra Singh Bhadauria, co captain Allen Martin, technician Dean D’Souza and engineer Yatin Wakde, whose bodies were burned in the crash. The recovery team also failed to record the recovery process which is a violation of protocol, just as in the Mangalore crash.

    NASA Conducts Crash Test on Cessna to Assess ELT Performance

    NASA has recently conducted a crash test using a Cessna 172 plane at NASA’s Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia.

    The test was carried out to evaluate the performance of Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT) in the aircraft. The aircraft was hauled to 82 feet to assess how the 4 ELTs installed in the plane perform during cabling’s strength and fire tests and beacons’ drop and vibration tests

    NASA spokesperson Chad Stimson said “Everything worked. But the team will take some time to sort out why the ELTs performed the way they did.”

    Cropduster Lost in Mississippi


    What: Yellow and blue crop duster en route from Greenville, Ala., to Cleveland, Miss
    Where: wooded area in the Bogue Chitto community, Mississippi
    When: Friday
    Who: Monty Hudson
    Why: Hudson and his brother (in a separate plane) were traveling from Greenville and encountered bad weather. The plane dropped off radar in Alabama Friday–Hudson died Friday–and was missing until Monday. WHen the wreckage was found in Neshoba County, it was hanging nose down in pine trees at 5:30 p.m. two miles northeast of Bogue Chitto off Road 765. Apparently the plane had caught on fire after crashing.

    7 Killed in Indian Air Force Helicopter Crash

    helicopterA helicopter belonging to the Indian Air force crashed in Sitapur district of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh state of India.

    The helicopter, which was en route from Bareilly to Allahabad, crashed nose down and bursted into flames. The accident happened on July 25 at about 5 p.m. after the Dhruv helicopter lost radio and radar contact. According to the authorities, the pilot reported a technical fault in the helicopter before losing contact.

    There were 2 pilots and 5 passengers aboard at the time of accident; all of them were killed. A statement released by the air force maintained that there was no report of any damage on the ground.

    SCAT Bombardier Crashes 5 Miles from Airport, 21 Fatalities


    On Jan 29, 2013, A SCAT-owned Canadian-built Bombardier Challenger CRJ-200 # UP-CJ006 en route from Kokshetau Kazakhstan to Almaty crashed in Kyzyl Tu village five miles from the Almaty airport.

    The weather conditions consisted of low cloud cover and fog.

    There was neither fire nor explosion, but the plane shattered when it hit the ground which was covered in heavy snow.

    None of the 16 passengers (including a child) or 5 crew survived.

    SCAT is a domestic airline that was established in 1997 that has a fleet of six 50 set jets

    Bad weather and poor visibility is believed to be the cause of the crash at 1.p.m.

    Indonesian Military Plane Crashed in Papua; 13 Killed

    An Indonesian military plane crashed into a mountain in Papua province of Indonesia, on December 18th.

    The Hercules C-130 plane took off from Timika, Papua, and was preparing to land in Wamena, Papua, when it went down.

    There were 13 people aboard the plane, including 3 pilots and 10 passengers; all of them were killed in the crash.
