    Southwest Emergency Landing in Phoenix

    What: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 en route from El Paso to Phoenix
    Where: Phoenix
    When: Jun 30th 2011, 9:33 pm
    Who: 139 aboard
    Why: On approach to Phoenix, the pilot declared emergency and shut down an engine when one of the engines failed. Some of the systems operating were backup systems. Details about the engine issues were not released but Southwest said there was an “issue with engine exhaust.”

    The plane made a safe landing at 9:33 with emergency services on standby, but taxied to the gate, and did not need towing.

    Maintenance is examining the plane.

    United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Lexington

    United Airlines flight UA-4183 had to return and make an emergency landing in Lexington, Kentucky, on June 12th.

    The plane took off for Houston, Texas, but had to turn back due to an issue with the nose gear.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Ryanair Jet Diverted to Dublin Airport After Passenger Fell Sick Mid-Air

    RyanairRyanair flight FR-8422 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Dublin Airport, Ireland, on August 14th.

    The plane was en-route from Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, to Edinburgh, United Kingdom, when a female elderly passenger fell ill, prompting the crew to declare an emergency.

    The plane landed uneventfully and the patient was immediately shifted to hospital.

    The plane departed again after a short delay.

    What: PSA Airlines/US Airways Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Nashville,TN to Washington National,DC
    Where: Charleston
    When: Jan 12th 2012
    Who: 23 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: While en route, the crew noted cargo smoke and diverted to Charleston.

    The flight was cancelled.

    After landing, the plane was inspected by emergency services, who found a closed system to be leaking.

    WestJet Flight Diverts to North Dakota due to Electrical Odor in Cabin

    WestJet flight WS-1578 had to divert for an emergency landing in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on May 19th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane heading from Calgary, Canada, to Chicago, Illinois, was diverted due to a strong electrical odor in the cabin.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

    British Airways Flight Forced to Change Direction Due to Spanish Military Jet

    British airwaysBritish Airways flight A490 was forced to change its direction due to a Spanish military surveillance jet flying nearby in Gibraltar, on October 31.

    According to the authorities, the Ejército del Aire P3 aircraft, which was flying ahead of the British Airways plane, ‘suddenly reversed its direction and took another course’, entering the flight path of Airbus A320. The air traffic controllers then asked the British Airways plane, which was around 10 to 15 miles from landing in Gibraltar, to change direction in order to maintain safe distance.

    According to a statement released by Gibraltar authorities on Monday, “The Government of Gibraltar is waiting for a full report on the incident, which will clarify whether the Spanish military plane made an incursion into the airspace over British Gibraltar territorial waters.”
