Boeing’s India Commitment

NEW DELHI, Feb. 9, 2010 — Boeing [NYSE: BA] will present world-class products and services including the F/A-18IN Super Hornet, C-17 Globemaster III, P-8I, AH-64D Apache and CH-47F Chinook to Indian government officials, military officers, and other valued stakeholders at Defexpo 2010. The exhibition takes place Feb. 15-18 at the Pragati Maidan complex in New Delhi.

“This is an important year for Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) in India,” said Vivek Lall, BDS vice president and India country head. “Many of our products and platforms are currently in competition or under active consideration by the government, and we are looking forward to demonstrating how they will quickly contribute to India’s defense modernization and bring long-term industrial benefits to the nation.”

Boeing is kicking off its Defexpo participation with a preshow briefing for the media at noon on Thursday, Feb. 11, at the Taj Mansingh Hotel. During the show, BDS executives will invite stakeholders into an F/A-18IN Super Hornet cockpit simulator to demonstrate the aircraft’s advanced features, including its superior air-to-ground and air-to-air capabilities. Boeing also will provide media briefings on the C-17 Globemaster III and on two Boeing Rotorcraft products in current competitions — the CH-47F Chinook and AH-64D Apache. An Airborne Battle Management briefing will cover Airborne Early Warning and Control as well as the P-8I long-range maritime patrol and anti-submarine aircraft. India selected the P-8I for its navy last year; the first of eight aircraft is scheduled to enter the fleet in 2013.

    Seattle-Bound Alaska Airlines Flight Diverts to Vancouver International Airport

    AlaskaAlaska Airlines flight 76 made an emergency landing at Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia, Canada, on May 3.

    The Boeing 737-400 aircraft was flying from Juneau, Alaska to Seattle, Washington when it developed a problem in one of its electrical systems, prompting the pilots to land at the nearest airport.

    The plane landed uneventfully.

    Continental Emergency Landing

    What: Continental Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Tel Aviv to Newark,NJ
    Where: Tel Aviv
    When: Nov 9th 2011
    Who: 280 aboard
    Why: When smoke was reported as coming from the baggage compartment, the pilots returned to Ben-Gurion International Airport and made a safe landing.

    45 ambulances and 17 mobile units were on the scene of the emergency landing.

    The origin of the smoke turned out to be an oven in the aft galley.

    Delta Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Hydraulic Leak

    Delta Airlines flight DL-181 made an emergency landing in Manila, Philippines, on July 18th.

    The Boeing 767-300 plane flying from Narita International Airport, Japan, was descending toward Manila when the crew noticed a hydraulic leak.

    The plane landed safely and was towed to the apron. All one hundred and twenty passengers and nine crew members remained unharmed.

    Azur Air Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Russia

    Azur Air flight ZF-6334 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Novosibirsk, Russia, on January 23rd.

    The Boeing 757-200 plane heading from Phuket, Thailand, to Samara, Russia, was diverted after the airport crews found pieces of rubber on the departure runway.

    The plane landed safely. All 116 passengers and 7 crew members remained safe.

    Delta Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Buffalo

    Delta Airlines flight DL-878 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Buffalo, New York, on November 5th.

    The Boeing 717-200 plane heading from Hartford, Connecticut, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, was diverted due to loss of cabin pressure.

    The plane landed safely. All ninety-five people aboard remained unharmed.

    No Mayday, then Gone

    I could speculate here about what caused the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, but that is all it would be: speculation. One can look at the type of plane, the weather, and various circumstances, but the truth is that the devil is in the details, and we just don’t know the details. The investigation will turn them up; the investigation can be a long road down a circular path.

    It makes it more difficult when there was no distress call. No mayday. Think of this: if something happens and you’re on a plane rapidly losing altitude—or with catastrophic issues which could be anything on a plane from a drunk grandpa to a bomb on board to a bad repair failing, to a sudden system failure due to frozen pitot tubes, what is the first thing that you are going to do if you’re part of the flight crew? That’s right—the first thing will be to fix the issue, and stay in the air. The last thing to do after the crisis is handled is to call ATC and let them know what’s going on.

    But because there was no distress call, we can assume that whatever happened happened fast. And now the wildest speculation of all is that the two people with fake passports were terrorists carrying a bomb. Do we need to go down that thought path? There are plenty of things that could have gone wrong although the 777 has a a stellar safety record.

    Now too, there is even speculation where the plane went down, apparently. There’s an oil slick approximately where the teams are searching. Maybe they’re right. Maybe under that slick, there’s a beacon to hear.

    Still, I keep hoping there’s a raft somewhere full of survivors.
