Boeing Leaders to Address Bio-Fuels, Growth, Emerging Issues at Asian Aerospace 2011

HONG KONG, Mar. 2, 2011 – Experts from Boeing, the world’s largest aerospace company, will present key trends at Asian Aerospace 2011 and discuss their implications for commercial aviation. Asian Aerospace takes place March 8-10, at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong.

Boeing also will provide the latest information about its commercial business, including updates on recent improvements to its existing family of airplanes and the company’s single- and twin-aisle development programs.

Boeing executives will speak at conference sessions that address sustainable aviation bio-fuels and explore developments in the cargo sector. The company also will conduct a media briefing to share the company’s market outlook for the next 20 years. All Boeing speakers and executives will be available for exclusive interviews prior to and during Asian Aerospace 2011 on a first-come, first-served basis.

Asia continues to be a growth region for Boeing Business Jets (BBJ) which now has airplanes certified and available for charter in both Hong Kong and mainland China. Media are invited to tour a BBJ, managed by Hong Kong based Metrojet, on static display March 8 and 9 at the Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBAC). Transportation will be provided from AsiaWorld Expo to HKBAC during show business hours, 10:00am – 4:00pm, by Asian Aerospace organizers.

Boeing’s strategy is to provide the right mix of products and services that enable our customers provide a great customer experience, generate more revenue and reduce operating expenses.”

With the commercial aviation sector growing ever more conscious of environmental issues, Al Bryant, vice president of Boeing Research and Technology, plans to share Boeing’s experience in promoting the development of sustainable aviation biofuels. The presentation will take place during “The Future of Aviation-Emerging Issues & Solutions” conference as part of the Asian Aerospace Congress.

Randy Tinseth, vice president of Marketing, and Jim Edgar, regional director, Cargo Marketing, both of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, will provide a commercial airplane and air cargo market update for media, with a focus on the Asia Pacific region. In addition to providing the company’s market projections for the next 20 years, the media briefing also will include product updates.
Edgar also will participate on a panel at the “Air Freight Asia Conference” on the growth of the air cargo industry in countries neighboring China.

    Air New Zealand Pilot Collapsed, Died after Landing Dreamliner in Perth

    An Air New Zealand pilot collapsed shortly after she landed the Flight NZ175 full of passengers in Perth, Australia, on October 26.

    Air New ZealandIt is suspected that Captain Ann Barbarich, 59, one of the first female pilots to work for Air New Zealand, suffered a brain aneurysm, just minutes after landing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. One of the 3 other pilots took controls and taxied the aircraft to the gate.

    Captain Barbarich was examined by 2 doctors aboard and was then rushed to the Royal Perth Hospital where she died 2 days later on October 28.

    None of the 233 passengers aboard was injured.

    According to Air New Zealand chief pilot David Morgan, “Ann was at the controls when the aircraft landed in Perth and the aircraft landed normally…Unfortunately after landing she became seriously ill. Another pilot took over and taxied the aircraft to the gate while the other pilots began to assist Ann. The aircraft was safe and under control at all times…Ann will be sadly missed by everyone at Air New Zealand. We have been actively supporting her family over recent days and will continue to do so. Our thoughts continue to be with them at this difficult time.”

    Thomson Airways Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Larnaca International Airport

    ThomsonThomson Airways flight TOM2334 made an emergency landing at Larnaca International Airport, Cyprus at 9:00 P.M. on July 8.

    The Boeing 767-300, travelling from Manchester, UK, to Larnaca, Cyprus, had to declare an emergency after it experienced short-term air turbulence.

    Among the 328 passengers and 10 crew members aboard, 4 crew members sustained injuries.

    The injured were taken to hospital.

    Cargolux Plane Returns to Canada after AoA Vane Goes Missing

    cargoluxCargolux flight CV-775 had to return and make an emergency landing at Calgary International Airport, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, on May 28th.

    The Boeing 747-400, en-route to Luxembourg, had to return shortly after the crew heard a loud bang followed by the stick shaker activating. It later turned out that an AoA (Angle of Attack) vane was missing.

    The plane landed uneventfully.

    All people onboard remained safe.

    When: Aug 10th 2011
    Who: 147 passengers, 6 crew
    Why: On landing in La Paz, the right main gear tire blew out.

    Emergency services responded to the disabled plane stranded on the runway. Damage included a hydraulic leak. The plane was towed to the gate.

    Boeing emergency landing in Buenos Aires

    What: Flight AA956, American Airlines Boeing 767 en route from Ezeiza International of Buenos Aires to New York
    Where: Buenos Aires
    When: May 20 took off at 8:39 p.m and landed at 1:17
    Who: 200 passengers
    Why: The flight returned to Buenos Aires for an emergency landing due to a technical failure of the “defrosters.” The 767 anti-ice system is essential as the plane flies at 10,000 feet. No injuries were reported. The flight had to fly over De la Plata River to “*finish the fuel.”

    There’s no indication if *finish in this context means dump (they did fly over a river) or use up. The term came verbatim from a Xinhua report–so we have a report that has gone from Spanish to Chinese to English and we do apologize if we lose details.

    The flight has been rescheduled for Thursday.

    China Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Japan

    China Airlines flight CI-170 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Nagoya, Japan, on July 8th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Taipei, Taiwan, was originally scheduled to land in Toyama, Japan. However, despite multiple attempts, the crew could not land in Toyama due to unstable air currents.

    The crew subsequently diverted to Nagoya and made an emergency landing due to shortage of fuel.

    All one hundred and fifty-five people aboard remained unharmed.
