    Baby Arrives Via Air India


    What: Air India Boeing 777-300 en route from Delhi India to Toronto,ON Canada
    Where: Kazakhstan
    When: Oct 22nd 2011
    Who: 1 baby
    Why: While en route, 35-year-old Kulraj Kaur (Kuljeet), a pregnant passenger in her 32nd week was traveling with her husband when she went into labor. A pediatrician and an oncologist were on board to deliver the baby. The eight hour delivery occurred at 31,000 feet and was considered “normal”. The flight continued, and the baby was born while the flight was still in the air.

    According to aviation law, an infant born on a flight is granted citizen ship to the country where the plane is registered, regardless of the parents’ citizenship or location of the event.

    The pilot Captain Kapil Kohli told Canadian ATC that “We departed with 268 passengers, but will be landing with 269.”

    Most airlines allow women to fly up to 35th weeks, after which they require a note from their obstetrician.

    Air Tanker Crashed Fighting Yosemite Wildfire; Pilot Killed

    wildfireAn air tanker, belonging to California Fire Department, crashed while fighting the Dog Rock Fire near Arch Rock in Yosemite National Park, northern California, on October 7.

    The Cal fire department confirmed that the single-seater S-2T aircraft went down at around 4:26 p.m. near an entrance to the Yosemite National Park.

    The pilot of the air tanker was killed in the accident. He was later identified as Geoffrey “Craig” Hunt, 62, of San Jose.

    Chief Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director said, “We continue to mourn the tragic loss of Craig…We know wildland firefighting is an inherently dangerous job, but Craig made the ultimate sacrifice.”

    Helicopter Crash in UK

    What: Helicopter out of Blackpool Airport
    Where: Barnaby Sands on the Lancashire coast near Fleetwood.
    When: 23 September 2009
    Who: Pilot and student: Pilot Steven Lewis, 38, from Rainhill, Merseyside, died along with Philip Gray, 45, of Mawdesley, Lancashire.
    Why: The helicopter crashed on a training flight. The pilot issued a mayday based on engine troubles, and steered away from populated areas, hoping to find a softer landing.

    Sikorsky Helicopter Crashes in Louisiana, 3 fatalities


    On March 15, 2013, an Era Helicopters LLC Sikorsky S-76A with three board crashed just before noon in Cameron Parish Louisiana in a remote area of swampy/muddy pastureland with only four-wheeler access.

    The helicopter had taken off from Lake Charles Regional Airport. Emergency services responded to the scene, but access was limited to 4 wheel vehicles.

    The helicopter was on a maintenance test flight with the pilot and two mechanics aboard. The fatalities were listed as the pilot, William R. Croucher, 69, of California; and two mechanics: Michael Lee Tyree, 55, of Iowa, La., and Timothy Lloyd Goehring, 41, of Sulphur, La.

    Era helicopters normally provides transport to oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska, but this flight was reported as a maintenance flight.

    THe FAA and the NTSB are investigating.

    Era Helicopter’s statement:
    “We deeply regret this unfortunate accident and we will use all of our resources to support the families of those involved. Our review will continue in concert with the investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, which has jurisdiction over this matter”

    Piper Crashes in Chile


    An Aero Hein plane in flight.

    What: Aerohein Piper PA-31-325 Navajo en route from Melinka to Quellón
    Where: Quellón Chile
    When: Mar 1 2012
    Who: 8 aboard, 7 fatalities
    Why: On a 20 minute flight, ATC lost contact with the plane six minutes into the flight. Air Force and Navy planes searched where the emergency signal beacon issued a single alarm before the aircraft crashed into the sea.

    The plane’s wreckage was located by passengers in a boat in the Gulf of Corcovado off Chiloe island on Piedra Blanca at the mountain’s base. Occupants of the stricken plane included a businessman, his son and company divers and pilot Ricardo Hein. The list of dead includes Richard Hein, Genaro Barrientos Barria, Christopher Barria, Carlos Muñoz, Juan Gonzalez de La Fuente, Onofre Uribe Soto, and Pablo Briceño.

    Five of those aboard have been found.

    Waterford Pilot Crashes by Williams Lake

    What: 1946 Piper J3C-65 Cub
    Where: Waterford Township
    When: July 19, 2011 7:10 p.m.
    Who: pilot
    Why: The pilot was attempting to make a lake landing with the single engine seaplane when he hit trees near Ideal Terrace and crashed in a field near Williams Lake. The pilot managed to avoid houses in the area, but was injured in the crash with severe injuries to his neck and cuts on his legs.
