Italy said at least three passengers were Italian.The pilot had 11,000 hours of flying experience, and 1,700 hours flying this aircraft. Why: The last known radio contact was an automatic message made at 0133 GMT when the plane was near the Island of Fernando de Noronha; since then, the airplane has made no radio communication. Fifteen minutes after flying through a storm and strong turbulence, there was an electrical short-circuit. There is speculation that the plane may have been hit by lightning.
Search planes left Fernando de Noronha Island looking for signs of the plane concentrating in an area 230 miles off the northeast Brazil coast. Though there is not radar over the entire ocean, the black box will be emit a signal even if it is under water.
The flight left Rio at 7 p.m. and was expected in Paris on Monday at 11:15 a.m. By now, fuel would have run out.
Families of the missing are being brought to an information centre at Charles de Gaulle airport.

What: Wizzair Airbus A320-200 en route from Riga to Eindhoven Where: Eindhoven Netherlands When: Mar 16th 2012 Who: 174 aboard Why: After making a safe landing, while on the runway, smoke was observed trailing from an engine. Emergency services responded to the scene.
It is not known if passengers disembarked on the runway, by mobile stairs or slides or if they were taken to the gate.
THe cause of the smoke was attributed to an oil leak.

Southwest Airlines flight WN-1658 had to make an emergency landing in Portland, Maine, on April 3rd.
The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Baltimore, Maryland, was on approach to Portland when the crew declared an emergency due to a problem with the flaps.
The plane landed at higher than normal speed. There were 180 people aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

Southwest Airlines Flight 481 returned to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, located in Austin, Texas, for emergency landing on the morning of September 23.
The flight, headed to Dallas, was diverted after the crew reported odor in the cabin.
The plane landed safely however, as a precaution, passengers were evacuated through evacuation slides. None of the 107 passengers and 5 crew members was hurt.
The passengers were accommodated in other flights while the aircraft was taken for maintenance.

What: United Airlines/Shuttle America Embraer ERJ-170 en route from Denver,CO to Toronto Where: Denver When: Nov 23rd 2011 Who: 68 passenger Why: While climbing out of Denver, passengers and crew smelled smoke in the cabin.
A newscast said that passengers heard a “pop” before the pilots turned around and returned to the Denver airport.
They made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked on the runway and were provided an alternative flight.
