    What: Qantas Boeing 747-400 en route from San Francisco to Sydney
    Where: San Francisco
    When: Aug 31 2010, 12:45 a.m.
    Who: 212 passengers, 19 crew
    Why: After takeoff, the right engine failed (exploded), and disrupted the outer engine cowling. Observers reported “a thud, shower of sparks, and engine fire.”

    On board, the pilot announced that the captain announced that an engine blew up. The crew shut down the afflicted engine, dumped fuel over the Pacific and returned to San Francisco where it made a safe landing. Inside while landing, passengers cheered.

    Passengers were provided hotel accommodations. There were no injuries. Experts have noted the rarity of this type of engine explosion, and also mention how lucky passengers are it occurred facing “out” – although the engine is built to contain exploding particles.

    Plane Carrying Bulgarian PM Makes Emergency Landing at Sofia Airport

    A plane, carrying the Bulgarian Prime Minister, had to make an emergency landing at Sofia Airport, Bulgaria, on the evening of February 11.

    The governmental Falcon took off for transporting Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to Brussels, Belgium. However, its landing gear could not close due to a technical problem.

    The plane made an uneventful emergency landing. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    According to Bulgarian Transport Minister Ivaylo Moskovski, a team of Swiss experts would thoroughly inspect the plane.

    Radar Failure in Iberia Airbus

    What: Iberia Airbus A340-300 en route from Sao Paulo Brazil to Madrid
    Where: Sao Paulo

    Why: While en route, the flight developed problems with their radar and returned to Sao Paulo where they made a safe landing.

    Wizz Air Plane Diverts to Budapest after Lightning Strike

    WizzAirWizz Air flight W6-2927 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Budapest, Hungary, on November 7th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane flying from Ljubljana, Slovenia, to Charleroi, Belgium, was diverted due to a lightning strike.

    The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

    What: Air Canada Jazz Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Victoria to Calgary
    Where: Vancouver
    When: Jan 5th 2010
    Who: not available
    Why: While en route, the crew reported a fire alert. They diverted to Vancouver, apparently handling the fire on approach; and they made a safe landing in Vancouver, where the plane was looked over.

    Japan Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Electrical Problems

    Japan Airlines flight JL-69 had to return and make an emergency landing in Los Angeles, California, on November 19th.

    The Boeing 787-800 plane took off for Osaka, Japan, but had to turn back due to electrical problems.

    The plane landed back safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
