    Thomas Cook Airlines Flight Returns to Manchester, England

    Thomas Cook Airlines flight MT-2824 made an emergency landing in Manchester, England, on July 12th.

    The Airbus A330-200 plane took off for Los Angeles, California, but had to turn back after the crew noticed smell of burning coming from an oven.

    The plane landed back uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    Why: smokey stench in the forward galley. The plane made a successful emergency landing, without further incident.

    2. accidentally toasted the microwave or
    3. tried to sneak in a smoke:

    Virgin Australia Flight Returns to New Zealand After Bird Strike

    Virgin Australia Airlines flight VA-101 had to return and make an emergency landing in Christchurch, New Zealand, on March 19th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Melbourne, Australia, but had to return shortly afterwards due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    British Airways Diverts to Tamanrasset

    What: British Airways Boeing 747-40 en route from Lagos Nigeria to London
    Where: Tamanrasset Algeria
    When: Feb 27th 2011
    Who: 301 passengers, 16 crewmembers
    Why: While en route, the plane developed engine trouble with an air bleed valve.

    The crew shut down an engine and diverted to Tamanrasset Algeria where they made a safe landing.

    A maintenance crew was dispatched to Tamanrasset. The replacement jet and the repaired plane were both in London less than 24 hours later.

    Passenger Plane Crashes in Cuba; Over 100 Dead

    A Boeing 737-200 plane, performing flight CU-972 on behalf of Cubana de Aviacion, crashed in Havana, Cuba, on May 18th.

    The incident happened shortly after the plane took off from Jose Marti International Airport in Havana.

    There were one hundred and five passengers and six crew members aboard at the time. Authorities said only three passengers survived and were shifted to hospitals in critical condition.

    The flight was heading to Holguin, Cuba.

    Jetstar A332 Cockpit Fire

    What: Australian Jetstar (division of Qantas) Airbus A330-200 en route from Japan to Australia (Osaka Kansai to Bilinga Gold Coast)
    Where: emergency landing on the island of Guam
    When: June 10th
    Who: 203 mostly Japanese passengers and crew
    Why: When a fire broke out in the cockpit when the plane was over the Pacific Ocean, one of the pilots used a fire extinguisher to control the fire.

    Passengers debarked normally.

    The plane is only two years old; and will be held in Guam as the incident is investigated. 4 investigators will be sent to examine the aircraft.
