    24 Casualties in Indonesia Crash

    What: 32 year old Tentara Nasional Indonesia-AU (Air Force) Fokker 27 registration A-2703
    Where: Bandung-Husein Sastranegara International Airport, Western Indonesia
    When: 06 APR 2009 1 p.m. Monday local time
    Who: Six crew members, one trainer and 17 military skydiving students. All 24 people on board died.
    Why: While landing during a regular training flight, the plane crashed and burst into flames at 1:05 pm (0605 GMT) in Bandung, 110 kilometres (74 miles) southeast of Jakarta. No one on the ground was injured. The weather is said to have been wet; and the plane is said to have been undermaintained due to funding problems. The plane is said to have been shaking–possibly encountering a 20-knot crosswind at the time of the accident– before it crashed in an air craft hanger and burst into flames.

    Nordwind Airlines Flight with Flaps Issue, Safe Landing at Krasnoyarsk

    What: Nordwind Airlines Boeing 767 en route from Krasnoyarsk to Phuket
    Where: Krasnoyarsk Airport
    When: Dec 9 2012
    Who: 279 passengers
    Why: While en route, the Boeing flight from Krasnoyarsk to Phuket developed flaps problem. After an alarm indicated the problem, the pilot returned to Krasnoyarsk and made a safe landing at 15:35. The plane was examined, and passengers were “sent to the Phucket reserve board.” (We take this to mean they were pointed to alternative flights to their destination.)

    There were no reported injuries. The incident is under investigation by the Yenisei transport office.

    Hot Delta Flight Lands Safely

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York to Rome
    Where: Halifax
    When: Jun 10 2010
    Who: 214 aboard
    Why: While en route over the Atlantic, smoke was found on board. The flight diverted to Halifax where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided. There’s no indication (yet) as to the cause of the smoke.

    Rolls Royce Trent Engine Defection Causes Singapore Airlines Airbus toReturn to Origin

    What: Singapore Airlines Airbus A380-800 en route from Singapore to Frankfurt
    Where: Singapore
    When: Mar 27th 2012
    Who: 430 passengers
    Why: While en route, the Airbus’s number three engine surged. Pilots shut down the engine and returned to Singapore.

    The engine involved was one of four Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines. A “surge” refers to “a disruption of airflow that affects an engine’s normal operation.”

    A Nov 2010 engine explosion that forced an emergency landing in Singapore initiated a grounding of Qantas entire A380 fleet in order to determine the safety of the Rolls-Royce Trent 900 engines.

    Passengers were provided an alternative flight to Germany.

    Mahan Air Airbus emergency landing after AC issues

    What: Mahan Air Airbus A300-B4 en route from Zahedan to Tehran Mehrabad (Iran),
    Where: Zahedan
    When: Mar 9th 2012
    Why: THe flight was en route but the cabin did not pressurize.

    THe crew returned to Zahedan where they made a safe landing. There is question whether the ac system was at fault or off.

    Several hours later, the plane took off successfully and made the flight.

    Where: Copenhagen
    When: Jan 11th 2010
    Who: not available
    Why: While en route, the flight developed a technical problem and decided to divert to Copenhagen. No details about the problem have been released. Replacement transportation was provided.
