    What: Mombasa Air Safari Let L-410UVP-EP en route from Ngerenge to Mombasa
    Where: Maasai Mara park, Kenya
    When: Aug 22nd 2012
    Who: 11 passengers, four fatalities, seven injured
    Why: The Mombasa Air Safari passenger plane crashed on takeoff at the Ngerende Airstrip. Narok district police chief Peterson Maelo said a middle-aged German man, an elderly German woman and two Kenyan pilots died from their injuries and “Those injured have been flown to Nairobi for treatment.” The ambulance service was Flying Doctors Service.

    Five German tourists, four Americans and two nationals from Czech Republic were aboard the flight.

    Rag Bags Plane Crashes during Vancouver Island Airshow

    What: Home built “rag bags” kit plane
    Where: Nanaimo Airport, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.
    When: June 4, 2011
    Who: pilot Dr. Bill Phipps, 71, of Campbell River
    Why: Six minutes into a planned eight minute exhibition before 1000 spectators at the Wings and Wheels air show, while supposed to be doing a four point roll, Dr. Phipps home built plane was “tail-on to the crowd and upright” and flew into the ground. A witness describes that “The right wing clipped the ground and he did a cartwheel.” Another witness said it was likely he stalled and that his wings lost lift.

    Rag Bags was Phipps name for his home-built wood and fabric plane.

    B.C. Ambulance and Cranberry Fire and Rescue recovered Phips, who was airlifted to Victoria General Hospital. He was in serious condition, with severe injuries but was stable Monday.

    Piper Crashes in Hawaii, multiple injured


    What: single-engine Piper Cherokee registered to Offshore Flight School Inc
    Where: near White Plains Beach, near Kalaeloa, the former Barbers Point the former Barbers Point, Hawaii
    When: 11:46 a.m.
    Who: two women and a man were injured in the crash. The official opinion of the pilot is that she did a good job in not stalling the plane.
    Why: The pilot reported steering problems shortly after takeoff. The plane was flying practice routes around Kalaeloa and lost power on departure. On attempting an emergency landing, the plane flew through power lines, plunged through trees that broke off the aircraft’s wings and crashed just outside the runway area.

    Venezuela National Guard Helicopter Crashes in Colombia

    plane crashA Venezuela National Guard helicopter crashed onto a parking lot in Paraguachon, La Guajira, Colombia, on December 28.

    Delcy Rodriguez, Venezuela’s top diplomat, said, “Adverse weather conditions led to this unfortunate accident. We thank Colombian authorities who provided support to the officers.”

    There were two people aboard the Bell helicopter at the time; including the pilot and the co-pilot. Both of them were injured in the crash. They were taken to hospitals in Venezuela.

    Colombia’s Defense Minister Luis Carlos Villegas said, “”We will proceed through diplomatic channels with the government of Venezuela to establish where the wreckage will be sent.”

    Connecticut Pilot Treed


    What: 1930s single-engine de Havilland Tiger Moth
    Where: East Windsor, Conn
    When: Saturday August 30
    Who: pilot and passenger
    Why: The plane lost power 200 feet from the runway at the Skylark Airpark Saturday. The pilot and passenger crashed in treetops and were stuck in the tree until help arrived. A tree surgeon climbed the tree, and set up a pulley to rescue the pilot and passenger who were apparently unhurt. The pilot was an instructor who “maintained an airspeed where he was in control and buffeted [the plane] into the top of the trees. That’s what saved both their lives.”

    Jet Airways Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Nagpur after Bomb Placement News

    Jet AirwaysJet Airways had to make an emergency landing at Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur, India, on March 22.

    The aircraft was flying from Delhi to Chennai when the crew was reported that there was a bomb placed in the plane, prompting the plane to land at the nearest airport.

    The plane landed uneventfully. The bomb threat was a phoned-in hoax that grounded five planes.

    All passengers onboard remained safe.
