Eurocopter Fuel Gauge Safety Alert

No one is saying that the recently discovered Eurocoptor problem with the low fuel level warning system had anything to do with Clutha ——leased police Eurocopter crashed thru the roof of the Clutha pub in Glasgow killing three crew members and seven people inside the pub——but it is out there on the table and one of those things that make you go hmmm. Connection or not, the Clutha accident is causing Eurocopter to take a closer look at their helicopters.

The preliminary report on Clutha is not out yet, but there are reports that the helicopter did not run out of fuel.

The Eurocopter fuel indicator problem is that the supply-tank fuel gauge can overestimate how much fuel is in the tank. Apparently the gauge can skip amber and go straight to red (low fuel.)

Eurocopter is sending out safety notices about the issue..

In the Clutha crash, the number of fatalities has risen to ten.

    Private Chopper Crashes Carrying Australian Concrete Entrepreneur

    What: DAVCRON PTY LTD Bell 206
    Where: South Turramurra, Sydney Australia
    When: July 22, 2011
    Who: 2 fatalities
    Why: While on a routine flight from Rosehill to the owner’s hanger in Wyee, the bell chopper crashed north of Sydney while flying in a heavy downpour. The wreckage was spread in a hundred meter area at the foot of a cliff in Lane Cove National Park. The pilot and passenger were confirmed dead. Emergency services could only reach by rappelling down. Recovery has been postponed till the weekend because of continued bad weather.

    Witnesses say they may have seen something fly off the back of the helicopter and one witness said the helicopter was upside down when it fell. Descriptions of the troubled helicopter included “clattering” and “explosion.”

    Initially the victims of the crash were not known, but their names have been released. The bodies of pilot Colin Greenwood, 35 and 85 year old Businessman Bruce Campbell were found in the wreckage.

    Officials say the pilot had filed a flight plan although it was not required.

    Campbell founded Davcron Engineering Pty Ltd and owned the chopper which regularly on Fridays flew him to his semi-rural home. Campbell has three sons and is a grandfather of five.

    Cessna Skyhawk Flips on Short Field Takeoff

    What: NOVEMBER CHARLIE FLYING GROUP Cessna F172M Skyhawk
    Where: Netherthorpe Airfield, South Yorkshire
    When: July 5 2012
    Who: 2 aboard, no injuries
    Why: The flight did not achieve lift on takeoff, possibly due to the combined effects of uphill runway, tailwind and damp grass surface.

    After the pilot’s attempt to rotate failed, the plane overran the runway, passed through a hedge and flipped.

    The pilot was able to secure the plane and assist the passenger’s exit.

    Maswings Crash


    On October 10, a MASWings de Havilland Dash 6-300 Twin Otter en route from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat made a landing in high wind, and short of the runway impacted a house in Kampung Sin-San.

    A woman and her son were in the living room while the plane struck the bedroom, dining room and porch. The plane had two crew, fourteen adult passengers and two children, of whom six sustained injuries and one died. The injured were first treated at Kudat Hospital. More severely injured will be flown out to Kota Kinabalu; and ten others received outpatient care.

    The two fatalities were the first officer and a passenger, Tan Ah Chai, 96. The pilot was Captain Wan Mohd Abd Amir Wan Yahya. First Officer Marc Joel Bansh, 23, died at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

    Ten firefighters responded to the scene.

    We deeply regret the incident in Kudat of flight MH 3002 on Thursday, October 10, 2013. The aircraft, with Registration Number DHC6 9M-MDM, departed from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat with 14 passengers and two technical crew onboard landed in the vicinity of Kudat Airport at 2.50pm. Out of the 16 onboard, 15 were Malaysians and one Filipino national.Regrettably there have been two fatalities (of which one is MASwings Co-Pilot) and two injuries. The Captain piloting the flight was Captain Wan Mohd Abd Amir Wan Yahya, 56. He has over 4700 total flying hours. Captain Wan Mohd joined MASwings on August 2011We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased and those involved in the accident, and we are doing everything we can to assist them in this extremely difficult time. We are assisting the passengers and families the best way we can.

    A 24-hour Call Centre service has been activated. Families of passengers who were on-board may call 603-7884 1234 for further enquiries. We have also set up our Go Team in Kudat to look after their needs and keep them as quickly informed as possible. The investigation will be carried out by the authorities.

    Malaysia Airlines together with MASwings are fully co-operating and assisting the investigation in every possible way. As per aircraft maintenance record, the Twin-Otter was fit to fly and was in good condition before the accident.Malaysia Airlines and MASwings will continue to monitor the situation at the crash site and update on the situation and will provide information relating to the flight itself and updates on steps being taken.Once again, we at Malaysia Airlines and MASwings express our deepest regret and extend our condolences to all affected parties.     Norwegian Air International Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Gatwick Airport

    Norwegian Air International flight D8-371 had to make an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport, England, on May 17th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Helsinki, Finland, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew noticed an issue with the slats.

    The plane landed back safely. There were 183 people aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

    Air India’s Loss of Income and pilots

    Air India’s delinquency in payroll which earlier this year led to a strike, has led to about fifty pilots quitting.

    Employees were promised incentives and raises to 30,000 employees. Currently pilots and other employees are owed a month’s salary.

    Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi said ” the management of the Air India was in a constant dialogue with the unions and associations of the pilots.”

    In the October strike, 100 pilots threatened to quit.
