    American Airlines Orders Two GE90-Powered Boeing 777s

    –EVENDALE, OHIO– American Airlines has ordered two new GE90-115B-powered Boeing 777-300ER aircraft. The aircraft will be delivered in late 2012.

    “GE Aviation is very pleased that American Airlines will be the first U.S. airline to operate the Boeing 777-300ER aircraft,” said Kevin McAllister, vice president and general manager of global sales for GE Aviation. “American and GE enjoy a relationship that started in the late 1960s, with American being the launch customer for the CF6-6 powered DC10-10. The entire GE team is excited to see that American will soon be operating our most advanced turbofan engine in service, the GE90-115B.”

    The Boeing 777-300ER, -200LR and 777 Freighters powered by GE90-115B engines have been highly popular aircraft/engine combinations. More than 580 of these aircraft have been ordered by 43 customers worldwide.

    At 115,000 pounds of thrust, the GE90-115B engine combines advanced technologies from the GE90 family with three-dimensional aerodynamic (3-D aero) compressor and wide-chord, swept composite fan blades for greater efficiency. The dual annular combustor emits no more than 40 percent of the hydrocarbons allowed by today’s international standards. Since entering service in 2004, the GE90-115B engine has proven to be one of the quietest engines per pound of thrust.

    Snecma of France, Avio SpA of Italy, and IHI Corporation of Japan are revenue-sharing participants in the GE90 program.

    The GE90-115B engine is part of GE’s “ecomagination” product portfolio — GE’s commitment to develop new, cost-effective technologies that enhance customers’ environmental and operating performance.

    Air France Plane Diverts to Montreal

    Air FranceAir France flight AF054 had to make an emergency landing at Trudeau Airport in Montreal, Canada, at around 4 p.m. on January 1, 2014.

    The flight, en-route from Paris to Washington D.C., was diverted after smoke was detected in the business class cabin.

    The Boeing 777-300, carrying 152 passengers and 17 crew members, landed safely and no one aboard was harmed.

    The airline confirmed the incident saying that the emergency landing was due to a “minor technical problem”.

    The plane was later able to resume the flight.

    ASL Airlines France Plane Diverts to France due to Disruptive Passenger

    ASLASL Airlines France flight had to divert and make a forced emergency landing at Toulouse-Blagnac Airport, Blagnac, France, on September 14th.

    The Boeing 737 en-route from Glasgow, Scotland, to Ibiza Island, was mid-air when an intoxicated passenger started causing disruption in the cabin, prompting the crew to divert.

    The plane landed uneventfully.

    The man was taken into custody before the flight continued to its destination.

    Boeing Conducts Test Flight

    ST. LOUIS, May 26, 2010 — The Boeing Company [NYSE: BA] successfully flew its ScanEagle Compressed Carriage (SECC) unmanned airborne system (UAS) at a testing facility in eastern Oregon on May 12. The 75-minute flight evaluated the aircraft’s airworthiness and flight characteristics in a simulated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) mission.

    The SECC — powered by a six-horsepower, heavy-fuel engine — was launched from a ground vehicle, flew an autonomous flight plan at various altitudes and provided streaming video from its electro-optical/infrared sensor package to a nearby ground station. The SECC was recovered using the same runway-independent SkyHook recovery system used by the ScanEagle and Integrator unmanned airborne systems. The SECC system will complete additional tests in the coming months.

    “This is a big step toward adding another aircraft with additional capabilities to Boeing’s UAS stable,” said Ron Perkins, director of Boeing Phantom Works’ Advanced Unmanned Airborne Systems. “The vehicle’s 132-inch wingspan and folding aero surfaces allow it to be carried on an aircraft pylon or in a container, giving the warfighter the choice of operating it from air, underwater, ground or surface platforms.”

    The SECC is a long-endurance, autonomous UAS designed to provide ISR, targeting, and battle-damage assessment.

    Southwest Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Salt Lake City

    Southwest Airlines flight WN-604 had to return and make an emergency landing in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 26th.

    The Boeing 737-700 plane took off for Los Angeles, California, but had to turn back after one of the engines caught fire.

    The plane landed safely. All one hundred and ten people aboard remained safe.

    Aer Lingus Plane Diverts to Cork Airport after Passenger’s Death Mid-Air

    Aer LingusAer Lingus flight EI 485 was forced to make an emergency landing at Cork Airport, Cork, Ireland, on the afternoon of October 18.

    The Airbus A320-200, en-route to Dublin, Ireland, from Lisbon, Portugal, had to be diverted in emergency after a 24-year-old passenger “ran amok” and later died mid-air.

    The plane landed uneventfully.

    Among 168 passengers and 6 crew members aboard, 1 person sustained minor injuries while trying to help the man.
