Unqualified Pilot Sued for Daughter’s Death

Accidents are what happen when you think they won’t.

If Steven Fay had known Jessica Malin would die in the flight and he would survive, he never would have taken her on the twin engine Cessna on Jan 1, 2011. At 4:30 p.m. on on Jan 1, 2011, the day of the crash, the plane’s wings clipped treetops while landing in Orange about 90 minutes after sunset.

He shouldn’t have flown her. He was not certified to fly the plane, which crashed approach to Orange Municipal Airport. His license was revoked after the crash. He was arraigned on Feb 1 2012 for involuntary manslaughter for Jessica Malin’s death. Malin was his daughter. She was 35.

Fay denied the charges. He returns to court on Feb 24.

What: Air India Airbus A320-200 en route from Muscat Oman to Kozhikode
    Where: Muscat
    When: May 20th 2010
    Who: 132 passengers
Why: One of the engine’s Exhaust Gas Temperatures rose too high according to indicators, prompting pilots to reject takeoff. Some of the tires popped, but the flight made a safe stop on the runway. The incident predated the Air India crash at Mangalore.

    Another incident
Four days after the Mangalore crash, Air India flight flight IX-212 hit an air pocket (or perhaps this could be termed clear air turbulence) while on “auto pilot” while the pilot was apparently in the VC. The flight dived five thousand feet while over Mumbai (reported to be as much as 15,000 feet). 112 passengers and 6 crew members landed safely.

  • A Sticky Case

According to Special Agent Peter Carricato, Maria Esther Castillo of Oswego is in court today charged with resisting arrest and interfering with the operations of United Airlines Flight 645–after spanking a flight attendant, standing on a blind passenger, hair pulling and assorted (possibly alcohol-related) bad behavior. Her disruption was actually bad enough that the flight crew was forced to duct tape her to her seat until the flight was diverted to Charlotte-Douglass International Airport where authorities forcibly removed her from the plane.

Before she was bound to the seat by duct tape, Castillo was bound to Chicago from Puerto Rico.

The criminal complaint was filed in U.S. District Court in Charlotte.
