American Airlines Business ExtrAA Launches New York Area Promotion

Companies Can Earn Up to 10 Award Tickets

EW YORK, Oct. 5 — For a limited time, companies based in the Greater New York area, as well as Eastern Pennsylvania, that enroll in the Business ExtrAA program can receive up to 20,000 Business ExtrAA bonus points – enough for 10 Economy PlanAAhead® awards(1) valid for the Continental U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Business ExtrAA® is a complimentary program that rewards companies for doing business with American Airlines. With Business ExtrAA, companies accrue points when their employees travel for business on American Airlines, American Eagle or American Connection® operated flights and include the company’s Business ExtrAA account number in their reservations.     Press Release – FAA Issues First-Ever Spaceport Grants to Strengthen Commercial Space Activities

    WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced a new grant program designed to fund projects that develop and expand commercial space transportation infrastructure. The Space Transportation Infrastructure Matching Grants will be awarded to four separate projects located in Alaska, California, Florida, and New Mexico.

    “The Obama administration is committed to making sure the United States remains the world leader in space development and exploration,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. “This new grant program underscores that commitment, and will help ensure that the commercial space industry can meet our current and future space transportation needs.”

    In June of this year the Obama administration unveiled a new National Space Policy that recognizes opportunities and advancements in commercial space capabilities. The 2010 policy lays out more specific ways for the government to make use of commercial capabilities.

    The FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation will administer the new Space Transportation Infrastructure Matching Grants. The first matching grants include: $43,000 for the New Mexico Spaceport Authority to provide an Automated Weather Observing System; $227,195 to the Alaska Aerospace Corporation for a Rocket Motor Storage Facility; $125,000 to the East Kern Airport District in Mojave, Calif., for an emergency response vehicle; and, $104,805 to the Jacksonville Airport Authority in Florida to develop a Spaceport Master Plan for Cecil Field. Under the law, the FAA can provide matching funds for specific projects being carried out by public entities involved in commercial space activities.

    The United States’ space program has three sectors – civil, military and commercial. The FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation is responsible for licensing, regulating and promoting the commercial-sector space industry. Since the office was created in 1984, the FAA has issued licenses for more than 200 launches, licensed the operation of eight FAA-approved launch sites known as spaceports, and has helped ensure that no loss of life or serious injury has been associated with these efforts.

    UPS Expands Boeing Airplane Health Management to MD-11 Fleet

    SEATTLE, Feb. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — Boeing (NYSE: BA) today announced that UPS will expand its Boeing’s Airplane Health Management (AHM) coverage to include its MD-11 Freighter fleet, in addition to the 747-400 Freighter fleet, which already utilizes AHM. AHM is an information-driven system that helps airlines better prepare and manage unscheduled maintenance events.

    The expanded agreement covers 38 MD-11 Freighters and 13 747-400 Freighter and Boeing Converted Freighter airplanes.

    “AHM allows aircraft maintenance personnel to be prepared to work unexpected aircraft exceptions when the aircraft arrives and will greatly streamline our operation,” said Warren Johnson, vice president, Maintenance and Engineering, UPS Airlines.
    “This will help increase the fleet’s on-time performance which is a great benefit to our customers,” said Mitch Nichols, UPS Airlines president.

    The large UPS freighters will feature the AHM Real Time Fault Management Module, which communicates in-flight information to ground stations for diagnosis and real-time operational decisions, using troubleshooting and historical fix success data. The airline uses this information to organize any needed maintenance operations and position the necessary people, parts and equipment.

    “Airlines need to have their aircraft generating revenue, so maintenance efficiency is an important initiative,” said Dennis Floyd, vice president of Fleet Services for Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “AHM delivers relevant information whenever and wherever it is needed while the airplane is still en route.”
    Airplane Health Management works through the MyBoeingFleet.com portal. Alerts and notifications are delivered to airline personnel through the Internet, fax, personal digital assistants, e-mail and pager services.

  • Human Factors: Air France 447 Update

    The BEA has just formed the « Human Factors » working group whose creation was announced at the time of the publication of the third Interim Report on the investigation into the accident to the Rio-Paris flight on 1st June 2009.

    This working group’s objective is to analyze all aspects connected to the conduct of the flight:

    Crew actions and reactions during the last three phases of the flight described in the third Interim Report, in particular in relation to the stall warning;
    Cockpit ergonomics;
    Man-machine interfaces.
    This working group is made up of seven experts:
    Three BEA investigators specializing in human factors;
    A psychiatrist specializing in risk analysis;
    A human factors aviation consultant;
    A type-rated A330 pilot;
    An A330 test pilot.

    The BEA may call on other experts from time to time and will consult Airbus and Air France when required.

    The group’s work will begin very soon and should be completed by the end of December 2011. Its thinking will take into account input from both the «Operations» and the «Airplane Systems» groups.

    All of the work carried out will be included in the Final Report, which will establish the causes of the accident, whose publication is planned for the first half of 2012.

    Airbus Press Release: Sichuan Airlines signs first Airbus Flight Hour Services in China

    Airbus to provide extended services to airlines in China

    Sichuan Airlines, the first Chinese operator to fly Airbus A320 Family aircraft, has signed a contract with Airbus for customized Flight Hour Services (FHS) for its future fleet of three brand new leased A330s, which are scheduled to be in service from early next year.

    In order to operate the newly built A330 fleet in a more efficient and cost-effective way, Sichuan Airlines has decided to use the Airbus FHS and will become the first customer for Airbus FHS in China.

    The FHS is part of Airbus’ comprehensive portfolio of support, services and solutions that help Airbus customers meet and exceed their business objectives. Airbus will deliver to Sichuan Airlines a tailor-made solution with strong support from Airbus worldwide customer services system. Under the agreement, Airbus guarantees availability of key Line Replaceable Units (LRUs) as well as related logistics and maintenance services for Sichuan Airlines for an initial 13.5-year period.

    Airbus FHS helps minimize aircraft on-the-ground time by providing airlines with even faster and simpler access to spare parts and services at predictable rates, based on stock and flight hour parameters. Airbus already has FHS services in operation with other customers in the Asian region.

    “The introduction of Airbus A330s and the Airbus FHS for the new A330 fleet is a natural choice for Sichuan Airlines as we have been in successful partnership with Airbus for 14 years.     NTSB CHAIRMAN HERSMAN TESTIFIES ON AIRCRAFT ICING

    NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman today, in testimony
    before the House Aviation Subcommittee, Committee on
    Transportation and Infrastructure, discussed the dangers of
    aircraft flying in icing conditions and highlighted
    longstanding Safety Board recommendations that have yet to
    be adopted by the Federal Aviation Administration to address
    the issue.

    Reducing the dangers of flying in icing conditions has been
    on the NTSB’s Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety
    Improvements since 1997. Last week, the NTSB voted to keep
    the issue area, along with its four open recommendations to
    the FAA, on the 2010 Most Wanted List with a “red”
    classification. The red classification indicates an
    unacceptable response by the FAA.

    “Although the NTSB relies on others to implement these
    recommendations, we have worked to educate the pilot
    community about some of the hazards associated with icing
    conditions through our Safety Alerts,” Hersman said.

    In 1981, the NTSB published a report titled “Aircraft Icing
    Avoidance and Protection” and recommended the FAA review
    icing certification criteria. The special study followed a
    series of icing-related accidents where aircraft operating
    in icing conditions and the varying consequences that ice
    accretion had on different types of aircraft raised concern,

    In the 1990s the NTSB re-examined the issue of airframe
    structural icing and concluded that the icing certification
    process continues to be inadequate. The Board also became
    concerned about airplanes that fly in supercooled large
    droplet conditions and that used pneumatic boots to deice
    the aircraft in flight. In the last decade, the Board has
    investigated more than 50 accidents involving aircraft
    icing, resulting in over 200 fatalities and it continues to
    investigate accidents where icing is a factor.

    In the last few years, the FAA has addressed some of the
    recommendations related to icing by issuing a number of
    final and proposed regulations. However, not all of the
    NTSB’s recommendations on icing have been addressed.
