What: ContactAir Fokker 100/Lufthansa en route from from Berlin Tegel to Stuttgart Where: Stuttgart When: Sep 14th 2009 Who: 73 passengers including Franz Muentefering and 5 crew (6 injury/issues) Why: After lowering the gear on approach to Stuttgart, the plane indicated an unsafe gear indication. The main gear would not lower; and after a holding pattern and attempts to resolve the issue, the plane made a belly landing on foam. Passengers debarked via slides.
Franz Muentefering, chairman of Germany’s Social Democratic Party was on board, en route to an election rally.
Five passengers were treated for shock, one flight attendant was hospitalized, but only one passenger was injured.

What: UT Air -ATR 72 en route from Tyumen to Surgut Where: Siberia When: April 2, 2012 Who: 39 passengers aboard, 4 crew, casualty numbers pending. Why: ATC lost communication with the plane not long after it was underway. It went down not long after takeoff, about thirty kilometers from Tyumen.
The plane was en route when it crashed near Tyumen, Siberia, Gorkovka Village. The pilots were attempting to make an emergency landing. Witnesses in Gorkovka said that the plane broke into three parts and caught fire. Most of the injured are suffering burns. The ministries of Emergency sent three planes with medical equipment, doctors and personnel.
Initial reports are that there were 17 survivors flown by chopper to medical facilities in Tyumen. Some reports say everyone aboard died. Many of the victims are children.
The plane caught fire after the impact. Two hundred emergency service personnel and rescuers are on the scene, and 43 emergency vehicles.

Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova announced that a dozen people were rescued and sixteen bodies recovered. One more of the rescued died, bringing survivors to 11. One man died in the helicopter on the way to the hospital.
Investigators are on the scene. Before anyone arrived, there was already speculation of pilot error and “technical difficulties.” The flight data recorders have already been recovered.

Scandinavian Airlines flight SK-944 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, on April 16th.
The Airbus A340-300 plane heading from Chicago, Illinois, to Copenhagen, Denmark, was diverted due to loss of cabin pressure.
The plane landed uneventfully. There were 196 people aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

Jetstar flight JQ 413 had to make an emergency landing at the Royal Australian Air Force base in Williamtown, New South Wales, Australia, on the afternoon of June 22.
The pilot declared emergency after the crew reported a bizarre smell in the aircraft’s cabin. The flight was en-route from Gold Coast, Queensland to Sydney at the time.
All 190 passengers aboard remained unharmed and were taken to Sydney by buses.
The plane was taken for inspection. Authorities believe it was cigarette smoke coming out of toilet.

Atlas Air cargo flight 5Y-33 had to return and make an emergency landing at Miami International Airport, Florida, on February 17.
The Boeing 747-800 plane took off for Buenos Aires, Argentina, but had to return shortly afterwards after tire debris was found on the departure runway.
The perimeter road around the airport was closed for traffic while the plane, carrying 6 crew members, landed safely. No injuries were reported.

Why: Windshield on the co-pilot’s side cracked in a crazed pattern during the flight; the flight landed successfully with no injuries.
