3 Spaniards 1 Guatemalan die in Helicopter Crash.

What: Helicopter en route from Guatemala’s northern El Peten Province
Where: rainforest in the rural province of Verapaz, some 185 miles (300 kms) northeast of the capital
Guatemala City in northern Guatemala
When: Thursday
Who: Spanish businessman Virgilio Casado was piloting the helicopter along with fellow Spaniards Jose Luis Briz Mateo and Juan Calvo Torre. Carlos Sigfrido Hurtarte Rivas, a Guatemalan citizen, also died in the crash.
Why: Cause is under investigation but likely heavy winds and rain

After a search delayed by bad weather, the bodies arrived in Guatemala City on Friday. A local aeronautics official believes the helicopter ran into a cloud and lost orientation and control (by a pilot unaccustomed to flying by instruments.)

    Where: Manado, Bitung, North Sulawesi

    Who: 10 aboard, (8 employees and 2 flight crew)
    Why: The helicopter PK-FUG flown by pilot Edi Purnomo crashed into Mount Dua Saudara while en route. Nine aboard died in the crash, including two Australians, two South Africans and four Indonesians were passengers on the flight. The crew were Indonesian.
    The flight was missing initially. Foggy weather hampered the search until it was finally found at 2 a m August 3, with one survivor, who died en route to the hospital. Work has been suspended at Newcrest’s Gosowong gold mine in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

    The chopper took off at 4:26 a.m. and lost contact with ATC shortly after takeoff.

    The chipper was a joint venture between Australia’s Newcrest Mining and Indonesian company Aneka Tambang.

    Glasgow Helicopter Crash Update

    The “Bond Air Services Ltd. for Police Scotland” Eurocopter EC135 T2+ registration #G-SPAO with three aboard crashed in the Clutha Pub, Stockwell Street, Glasgow. Three of the victims were aboard, six on the ground.

    There was a sort of silence.The whole ceiling at the left hand side of the bar, where it had been, had collapsed in on itself and the gantry of the bar also collapsed. There was an initial bout of screaming. There was a huge ball of dust. I went and opened the doors. Whilst I was holding the door I could see my brother…

    Then, after finding each other, the two assisted where they could.

    I think that person was conscious. He was moaning so he was conscious. There was a second person under him and that person, to me, didn’t look conscious — he was face-down. When we got out I spent time with a chap who was injured. He had a head injury. We put him in an ambulance and hopefully he is fine. We were fine. We were just lucky.

    Others described the helicopter as tumbling at a strange angle, or that it dropped like a stone. Inside, the patrons of the bar heard a large bang before the lights went out. Others describe a whoosh, smoke, and eerie silence as the plane fell. The roof fell in, and dust floated in, choking everyone.

    First responders were passers by. Some survivors walked away. The numbers of the casualties were initially 6 deceased, 32 hospitalized. The victims totaled nine, at last release. Two officers and a civilian pilot were aboard. Search and rescue dogs assisted in the search and rescue operation. Air accident investigation investigators, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and rescue personnel were on the scene.

    The helicopter involved passed a safety check last year. The helicopter does not have a flight data recorder but some of the systems may have recoverable data.

    Piper Crash in Mississippi


    What: Superior Pallet Co. Piper PA-32-300 Cherokee Six
    Where: Jackson, Miss
    When: Nov 13, 2012, 5:00pm
    Who: 3 fatalities, 1 injured
    Why: Three people aboard the Piper that crashed in Jackson Mississippi died at the scene.

    The residence of hLoretta and Roosevelt Jamison went up in flames after the plane impacted. Ironically, the plane had been en route to an FAA safety conference.

    The pilot had taken off but once underway requested to return to the airport. Witnesses reported the engine sputtering but the plane did not make it back to the airport, and crashed in the residence.

    One person was in the house when the accident occurred and she was able to climb through a bedroom window to safety. She is being treated at University of Mississippi Medical Center.

    The plane belonged to Roger and Michele Latham, but Latham and his wife and daughter were not aboard. The fatalities included Latham’s flight instructor John Edward Tilton Jr.and two passengers en route to the FAA safety conference.

    Taban Air Plane’s Landing Gear Collapses in Ardabil, Iran

    Taban Air flight HH-6243 suffered a gear collapse during landing at Ardabil Airport, Iran, on March 27th.

    The Boeing 737-400 plane was coming from Mashhad, Iran, when its right hand main gear collapsed.

    There were 163 people aboard at the time; all of them remained unharmed.

    The plane sustained considerable damage.

    Helicopter Survivor Testifies in Court

    On Nov. 5, Robert Decker, a weather observer on the Hibernia oil rig and the only survivor of the March helicopter crash (Cougar Flight 491 which crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Newfound and that killed 17 people) is slated to testify. Decker was hoisted from the water by a Cougar search-and-rescue helicopter.

    In addition to Decker, more witnesses will be testifying in the next six weeks—family members of the crash victims.

    Emergency Helicopter Landing

    Where: Emergency landing in Chicago’s Garfield Park ( touched down in Smith Park, near North Rockwell Street and West Grand Avenue.)
    When: Tuesday
    Who: 3 passengers on board. No injuries.
    Why: The helicopter made slow decent because of a cautionary light.
