In Jaipur at 9:30 on January 5, 2013, after having to divert due to visibility issues, an Imphal-Delhi Air India flight was out of fuel and made an emergency landing in Jaipur damaging a wing and suffering a flat tire. The video says the wing damage was due to a tree-strike after the tire burst.

The Gauhati to Delhi flight diverted Jaipur due to dense fog but in Jaipur too, the pilot landed in fog and low visibility. 168 passengers and 5 crew were aboard. We have heard no reports of injuries on the Airbus A320-231 #VT-ESH but the damage looks pretty bad, if the twitter post is of the correct incident. (That’s the correct # as far as we can tell.) TuiFly Plane Rejects Takeoff in Spain due to Blown Tyres

TuiFly flight X3-2149 had to reject take-off at Fuerteventura Airport, Spain, on September 18th.

The Boeing 737-800 en-route to Hanover, Germany, had to abort taking off because its both left tyres had separated from the wheels.

Germania Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Nuremberg

Germania flight ST-3712 had to return and make an emergency landing in Nuremberg, Germany, on February 3rd.

The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for Las Palmas, Spain, but had to turn back due to smoke in the cockpit.

The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

Airbus Engine Shut Down over Pacific

What: Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-200 en route from Auckland to Buenos Aires
Where: Pacific Ocean
When: Jan 21, 2010
Who: 229 passengers
Why: An hour into the flight, the left engine had to be shut down. The Airbus returned to Auckland to make a safe landing. After undergoing maintenance, repairs and essential services, the plane will optimistically be resumed eventually. It is not known if passengers have hotel accommodations or if they will be waiting at the airport.

Any time an engine must be shut down, especially when it is an airbus over a body of water, we all breathe a sigh of relief at a safe landing.

SAA Makes Safe Emergency Landing

Who: 116 passengers
Why: While en route the plane developed a technical glitch leading to an emergency landing. On the ground, the flight was towed due to a problem in the nosewheel steering.

Allegiant Air Flight Encounters Turbulence; 2 Injured

Allegiant Air flight G4-1592 had to return and make an emergency landing in Punta Gorda, Florida, on July 4th.

The Airbus A320-200 plane took off for Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but had to turn back after it encountered turbulence that injured two flight attendants.

The plane landed safely.

What: United Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Washington to Brussels Belgium
Where: Dulles (Washington DC)
When: May 8th 2010
Who: 176 passengers and 11 crew
Why: About five minutes after takeoff, the on board crew was informed that pieces of the plane were left on the runway. Those pieces turned out to be the remains of tires. The plane went into a holding pattern to burn off fuel, then landed safely back at Dulles between two and three hours after takeoff. A piece of runway pavement was missing, leading to the conclusion that the runway popped the tire…

George’s Point of View

Most times I fly United and hope that their maintenance is better than the look of their wearing interiors. I don’t usually worry too much about the airport.

If I knew that the plane I was on had left pieces of itself on the runway, I’d rather be circling the airport than over the Atlantic. On the other hand, if I knew a shaggy runway was going to pop a tire on the plane I was on, I’d have walked the runway myself before taking off.

What is a frequent flier to do but nag the FAA?
