Will Kingfisher Airlines Survive?

Unable to pay its crews, Kingfisher Airlines grounded its fleet this week.

Employees are in the midst of a strike and things aren’t looking good. Lenders refused funding, and employees can’t expect getting their full salaries in the foreseeable future.

The biggest hurdle to getting permission to fly will be running the gauntlet of DGCA safety issues. Then, if they can get their employees back on board, and get financing, there might be a possibility of the airline getting off the ground. But they need $600 million in financing within the next two months, and only have ten operating planes.

    GoAir Flight Returns to Delhi After Bird Strike

    GoAir flight G8-338 made an emergency landing in Delhi, India, on June 21st.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane took off for Mumbai, India, but had to turn back due to a bird strike.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All one hundred and fifty-five passengers aboard remained safe.

    The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

    When: May 13, 2011
    Who: 51 aboard
    Why: Five minutes after takeoff, the engine caught fire. Pilots returned the plane to the airport.

    Air India Express Flight Returns to Mumbai due to Hydraulic Failure

    Air India Express flight IX-247 had to return and make an emergency landing in Mumbai, India, on January 6th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Dubai, United Arab Emirates, but had to turn back due to a hydraulic failure.

    The plane landed safely. All one hundred and seventy-seven passengers and six crew members remained unharmed.

    Neos Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Delhi

    Neos flight NO-279 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Delhi, India, on April 18th.

    The Boeing 767-300 plane heading from Phuket, Thailand, to Milan, Italy, was diverted due to an issue with the cabin temperature controller.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    What does it mean that the Indian Civil Aviation Ministry is formulating new policies?

    The existing policies are not working, but we wonder if the new policies are being rewritten to fit in better with the workings of business and the status quo. Will the changes begin to address safety issues, pilot training, and crucial concerns of passengers rather than stakeholders in the business end?

    Will the policies be conceived and written by people involved in the mechanics of planes and technology, or will they reflect an infrastructure concerned only about maintaining a “bottom line?”

    The current perspective has resulted in dangerous new rest rules. (Pilots are not allowed to get fatigued till they have completed 10 hours of flying during the night; and the airline’s director of operations can extend that time another hour and a half.) The work ceiling for Indian pilots is 25% higher than that set for US or British pilots.

    Committees of experts should be based on expertise in successful operations, have proper credentials and their input should reflect current legitimate data and scientific findings. Otherwise, the changes will be reflected inevitably in more fatal crashes.

    So we wonder what does it mean? We have to wait until February when results are released.
