    4 Dead as Plane Crashes in Miami-Dade County

    smokeA small Beech 1900 aircraft crashed into trees near Miami Executive Airport, 12800 SW 145th Ave. in Miami-Dade County, Florida, at around 2:45 p.m. on February 11.

    The 19-passenger plane, belonging to a Venezuelan company, went down after it took off from Miami Executive Airport for Providenciales International Airport, located in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

    Authorities said the pilot reported engine issues shortly after the take off. FAA spokesperson Kathleen Bergen said, “The pilot was attempting to return to the airport when the aircraft crashed.’’

    There were 4 people aboard at the time of crash; all of them were killed. The pilot was identified as Captain Raul Chirivella, 52 while two of the three others were identified as Roberto Cavaniel and Juan Carlos Betancourt.

    The aircraft broke apart and caught fire after the crash.

    The police, the FAA and the NTSB are investigating.

    Cathay Pacific Plane Diverts to US Military Airport in Alaska

    Cathay PacificCathay Pacific flight CX884 had to divert and make an emergency landing at a U.S. military airport in Shemya, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, on July 29.

    The Boeing Co 777-300ER, en-route from Hong Kong, China, to Los Angeles, California, had to be diverted after it was filled with smoke.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All 276 passengers and 18 crew members remained safe.

    Qantas Flight Returns to Brisbane

    What: Qantas Boeing 737-400 en route from Brisbane,QL to Melbourne,VI
    Where: Brisbane
    When: Nov 10th 2009
    Who: 123 passengers
    Why: After takeoff, the crew detected abnormal engine vibrations, and returned to Brisbane 30 minutes after departure. Passengers reported hearing a bang and seeing a flash. A replacement flight was provided.

    Skywest Airlines Plane Returns to San Francisco

    SkyWestSkywest Airlines flight OO-5336 made an emergency landing in San Francisco, California, on April 18th.

    The plane was heading to Portland, Oregon, when the crew reported an issue with windshield heating and decided to return.

    The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained safe.

    The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

    Medical Rescuers Rescued off Norfolk Island Australia

    Where: Norfolk Island Australia
    When: Nov 18, 2009
    Who: pilots, patient, accompanying spouse and two medical crew
    Why: Pel-Air Aviation CareFlight medical evacuation flight en route to Norfolk Island for refueling encountered thick fog and made a controlled landing on on the water off the coast of Norfolk Island. Everyone aboard evacuated safely thanks to the skill of pilot Dominic James, were rescued by boat and taken to Norfolk Island hospital.

    Fatalities Rise in Congo Crash, ATC Trainee at Fault?

    What: Hewa Bora Airways Boeing 727-100 en route from Kinshana N’Djili to Kisangani (Democratic Republic of Congo)
    Where: Kisangani
    When: Jul 8th 2011
    Who: 112 passengers and 6 crew
    Why: Attempting to land in heavy rain, limited visibility, thunderstorms in the area, the plane broke up on impact, and came to rest 984 feet from the runway. The plane struck a tree about 1000 meters short of runway 13.

    53 survived the crash. Emergency services rescued 43. Two flight attendants were the only surviving crew.

    85 died as a result of the crash. Prior to this posting, the number of reported dead grew from 46 to 68 to 85. *

    The cause of the crash has been attributed to a mistake by a trainee air traffic controller but ATC service provider at Kisangani Airport, denies allegations of controller error.

    Update: Hewa Bora’s license “has been suspended until further notice.”

    The captain had a total experience of 7,000 hours with around 5,000 hours on the Boeing 727.

    Survivors are in hospital care in various hospitals of Kisangani
