LOT Polish Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Riga
LOT Polish Airlines flight LO-794 made an emergency landing in Riga, Latvia, on August 29th.
The plane took off for Warsaw, Poland, but had to turn back due to a brakes overheat indication.
The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

Why: When the pilot realized that the nose gear had only partially deployed, he turned back to the Van Nuys Airport and burned off fuel before he landed successfully. No one was injured although the dangling gear collapsed on landing. Apparently the plane landed on its main wheels, then “gently” on it’s collapsing nose before rolling to a stop. Cited in several sources as a textbook landing.
Delta Birdstrike in Charlotte
At 2 pm on March 7, 2013, Delta Airlines Airbus A320-211 #N314US Flight 130 was just underway from Charlotte Douglas International Airport to Detroit when it suffered a bird strike and left a trail of parts on the runway. None of the 130 passengers reported injury.
The flight was towed to the gate.
The flight was cancelled and takeoff aborted.
Passengers disembarked and were provided an alternative flight with a four hour delay.
Emergency services were on the scene, but there was no fire.

Small Plane Crash Lands near Brownsville Airport
A small plane made a crash landing in a field near the Brownsville/ South Padre Island Airport in Brownsville, Texas, at around 12:24 p.m. on October 26.
The authorities said the plane was flying from Mexico to Brownsville when it developed some issues. The pilot then had to land in emergency some 1,000 feet from the airport.
There were 2 people aboard, including the pilot. One of them was taken to Valley Regional Hospital while the other one sustained only minor injuries.
Fire officials said the crash caused damaged to the aircraft.
The cause of incident is under investigation.
California Chopper Collides with Plane Midair

Why: The helicopter clipped the plane over Rio Vista. The chopper was eight miles from the airport when it crashed.
Although the contact broke off the tail of the chopper and ended the severed rotor up 50 feet from the fuselage, the pilot walked away. She was reported to be unhurt; She is an experienced commercial airplane pilot who was logging night-flying hours alone toward a helicopter license.

Helicopter Crashed During Training Exercise in Southern California; 2 Marines Killed
A Third Marine Aircraft Wing helicopter crashed at Twentynine Palms Marine base in Southern California on the afternoon of January 24.
The UH-1Y Huey helicopter, carrying 2 Marines, crashed at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center during a training exercise.
Both occupants were killed in the crash. They were later identified as Captain Elizabeth Kealey, 32, of Indiana, Pennsylvania and First Lieutenant Adam Satterfield, 25, of Oldham, Kentucky.
Wing commander Maj. Gen. Michael Rocco said in a statement, “Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the two Marines we lost in this tragic accident.”
The cause of crash is not known at the moment.
