Also on Tuesday, a jet en route to Cozumel crashed in the Atlantic. All four of those aboard were recovered three miles northwest of Fort Lauderdale.
Initially, in two days there were three crashes, four fatalities and four missing. However two bodies have been found—pilot Josué Buendía Moreno and nurse Mariana González Isunza,—bringing the total dead to 6. Two Mexican men—pilot Hiram Galván de la O and Doctor Fernando Senties Nieto—are still missing off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. The search of the 4,000 square miles debris field has been called off. Over 1000 lbs of wreckage has been recovered.
A 1975 Mooney aircraft crashed into the Norfolk Botanical Garden in Norfolk, Virginia, early on March 4.
According to the aircraft’s owner James Beauchamp of Corapeake, North Carolina, the accident happened when his friend Michael Buxton of Portsmouth, Virginia, was returning from Key West, Florida, along with 2 other people.
The plane was scheduled to land at Suffolk Executive Airport, however, on reaching the airport, the pilot diverted it to Norfolk International Airport. According to Norfolk Fire & Rescue Battalion Chief Julian Williamson, “At approximately 1.5 miles out, the pilot made a transmission to the tower. This would be the last communication the tower had with the pilot.”
All three people aboard were killed in the accident.
The cause of accident is being investigated.

Apparently caused by power failure, the crash is considered unrelated to the previous discovery of cracks in hinges on the wings of more than a dozen F/A-18s ( This writer, however, does wonder if the two problems reveal a maintenance factor in common–though hinge cracks seem that they would be related to parts, wear or broader manufacturing issues.)
