    Plane Crash at Anchorage’s Merrill Field Airport Kills Pilot

    UntitledA 1964 Piper PA-12 plane crashed during takeoff from the runway 7/25 of Merrill Field Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, at about 8:24 a.m. on July 2.

    The pilot identified as Charles Hancock, 61, died in the crash. The NTSB investigator Cathy Gagne confirmed that he was the only person aboard the aircraft and had made contact with the Merrill Field tower before the plane crashed.

    The police and Anchorage fire department responded to the scene.

    According to eye witnesses, the plane was airborne before it crashed nose-down.

    All runways at the airport were closed following the crash. They were later re-opened after removing the plane by 11 a.m.

    Hancock was the owner and operator of a urethane insulation contractor, AIC Foam and Coatings.

    UPS Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Louisville

    UPS flight 5X-605 made an emergency landing in Louisville, Kentucky, on November 27th.

    The Airbus A300-600 freighter plane took off from Chicago, Illinois, but the crew failed to retract the landing gear.

    The crew continued to Louisville where they requested the longest runway. The plane subsequently landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

    Finnair Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Helsinki

    Finnair flight AY-348 made an emergency landing in Helsinki, Finland, on October 1st.

    The plane flying from Joensuu, Finland, was descending toward Helsinki when the crew needed to shut down one of the engines due to a technical failure.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Emirates Plane Makes Emergency Landing due to Flat Tire Indication

    EmiratesEmirates Airlines flight EK-9 made an emergency landing at Gatwick Airport, England, on September 8th.

    The Airbus A380-800 plane was flying from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, when the crew declared emergency due to indication of a flat nose wheel tire.

    The plane landed uneventfully. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    United Hydraulics Failure over Pittsburgh

    What: United Flight 615 en route from Washington DC to Chicago O’Hare
    Where: Pittsburgh
    When: landed at 12:51 May 22, 2009
    Who: 119 on board including Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers
    Why: After a hydraulic system failure was announced, the crew announced there would be an emergency landing. There had been “loud bang” at take-off, then the noise and vibration increased.

    The landing was safe; and United was providing another plane for passengers to complete the flight to Chicago.

    Thai Airways Engine Fire

    What: Thai Airways Boeing 747-400 en route from Bangkok to Chiang Mai
    Where: Bangkok
    When: Feb 3 2010
    Who: 330 passengers on board
    Why: After takeoff, the left engine surged. Consequentially, the crew shut down the engine, and returned to Suvarnabhumi Airport to make a safe landing. There were no injuries. The plane had reportedly undergone a maintenance check prior to takeoff.

    A replacement jet was flown in, which took off at 6.08 pm.
