    What: Transavia Boeing 737-700 en route from Amsterdam to Ibiza Spain
    Where: Amsterdam
    When: Jul 20th 2009
    Who: 148 passengers
    Why: During takeoff, the flight struck a bird; it took about twenty minutes to land back at the airport where the plane was assessed to be undamaged; however, when it took off after a two hour inspection, the anti-ice system turned out to be damaged, and the plane returned to Amsterdam where the passengers were provided an alternative flight.

    George’s Point of View

    I wonder what exactly was wrong with the icing system, and why it was missed on the ground.

    5 Fatalities in Noxen, PA Helicopter Crash During Thunderstorm

    A Robinson R66 #N646AG en route from Lehighton PA to Endecott NY with five aboard was en route when it disappeared from radar during conditions of severe thunderstorms and heavy fog. The last communication to ATC was a report around 10 pm Saturday that he was “losing altitude and would try to return to a nearby airfield.”

    The fragmented wreckage was located at 1:50 p.m. in a heavily wooded area. There was no fire, and no witness.

    Emergency response vehicles and personnel traveled an access road on the Mehoopany Wind Farm, a BP Wind Energy location, to the top of South Mountain. The unofficial guess at the cause of the crash is that the helicopter was caught in a thunderstorm.

    Flight Manifest:
    58-year-old Bernard Michael Kelly, of Ellicott City, Md.;
    daughter, Leanna Mee Kelly, of Savage, Md.;
    29-year-old Carl Robert Woodland, of Lovettsville, Va.;
    3-year-old son, Noah Robert McKain Woodland, of Leesburg, Va.;
    pilot 30-year-old David Ernest Jenny Jr., of Towson, Md.

    273 Korean Air Passengers Wait in Plane when Diverted to Russia

    July 2, 2013, a Korean Air Boeing 777 with 273 passengers aboard was en route from Chicago to Seoul when it had a drop in pressure as jet fuel was being pumped into the engine. The left engine broke down. After the malfunction, the pilots dumped fuel and diverted to Anadyr airport in Russia, where they made an emergency landing.

    Passengers had to wait inside the plane until the replacement jet arrived, so that with ten hours on the ground made a 13 hour flight almost 24 hours long for passengers.

    The malfunctioning jet was grounded in Russia pending inspection.

    In George’s Point of View

    I’d like to consider two additional points for those passengers stuck on their plane:

    As Anadyr airport is not one we have visited, we wonder if there is no Customs facility at Anadyr airport for individuals without visas to get some relief from the plane, which had to be exceedingly uncomfortable. Certainly there must be some humane way to abide by international law.

    This excessive time stretches some IATA standards of passenger accommodation from both airline and airport. The question isn’t whether passengers are entitled to some kind of compensation for their time and trouble, but rather how the airline and airport are going to recompense the passengers.

    The Boeing 777-200ER was on its way from London Heathrow to Boston when the crew reported a technical issue. It is believed that the one of the aircraft’s generators stopped working and the backup unit had to be used.

    The plane dumped fuel to shed off extra weight and landed safely at Shannon airport at 6:58 p.m.

    Engineers examined the aircraft after which it was able to resume its journey shortly after 9 p.m.
