Queenstown Crash injures Pilot


What: Cessna aircraft en route from Queenstown
Where: Fox Glacier Air Strip
When: Friday.
Who: Pilot and two passengers. The pilot was seriously injured but the two passengers
Why: On landing the plane took out power lines, cutting electricity to parts of the town and smashed into bush at the end of the strip.

Narrative:
A plane travelling from Queenstown to Fox Glacier crashed off the end of Fox Glacier air strip, apparently cutting power to the township. Two passengers were unhurt while the pilot suffered a punctured lung.

    What: Qantas Boeing 767-300 en route from Darwin to Brisbane
    Where: Mount Isa
    When: Jan 29th 2012
    Who: 170 passengers
    Why: While en route to Brisbane, a smokey odor developed in the cockpit. Pilots diverted to Mont Isa where they made a safe landing. Two Queensland Fire and Rescue Service firetrucks met the grounded plane. The investigation revealed no sign of smoke.

    The 767 does not normally land in Mount Isa, so stairs were unavailable. Passengers exited with the assistance of a wheel chair lift.

    A 737 has been sent as a replacement flight.

    Qantas Encounters Engine-jarring Turbulence over Weipa

    What: Qantas/Eastern Australia de Havilland Dash 8-300 en route from Cairns,QL to Weipa,QL
    Where: Weipa
    When: Dec 6th 2011
    Why: On approach to Weipa, the plane flew through a cloud and encountered disruptive turbulence.

    While there were no reports of injury, the turbulence resulted in engine problems. The plane made a safe landing but the incident is under ATSB scrutiny.

    Qantas Flight Hits Turbulence near Canberra; 2 Injured

    Qantas flight QF-718 encountered severe turbulence near Canberra, Australia, on March 13th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Perth was descending toward Canberra when it hit turbulence that injured two flight attendants.

    The plane continued for a safe landing. The injured crew members were taken to a hospital.

    New Mexico Cessna Crash

    On Feb 27, 2013, a privately owned Cessna 150 was near Deming New Mexico when it crashed.

    Before ATC lost contact with him, the last message they received from pilot Carl Link was a distress call saying he was losing his vision.

    Someone in the area heard the plane fly but did not hear it crash.

    The plane impacted near State Road 26 and ended up wheels up a quarter mile from the dirt road.

    The pilot died at the scene.

  • Cessna Crashes in Ohio

    What: Cessna 150
    Where: Grimes Airport in Urbana
    When: late Wednesday morning Sept 10, 2008
    Who: Pilot Linda Blodgett, 69, of Ashland had minor injuries; passenger Christina Creamer, 58, also of Ashland, was uninjured
    Why: After the airplane’s engine stalled, the plane nose-dived into the ground near the runway. The accident is under investigation by Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Federal Aviation Administration. Accolades were given to the pilot for landing safely with a stalled engine.

    Melbourne Emergency Landing

    What: Virgin Blue Boeing 737 en route from Melbourne to Sydney
    Where: Melbourne
    When: Nov 19 2010 7:16 a.m.
    Who: 122 passengers, 6 crew
    Why: Just after takeoff, the pilot noted a peculiar odor described as burning plastic (originally reported as smoke in the cockpit.) After being aloft for less than 30 minutes, the plane was met by 11 fire trucks on the landing which was safe; and the plane seemed to be operating as usual. Passengers were provided alternate flights as maintenance checked over the plane for the source of the smell, which may have been the new engine.
