Two Unruly Passengers Forced Sunwing Flight to Return to Toronto

SunwingA Sunwing flight had to return and make an emergency landing at Pearson International Airport in Toronto, Canada, on the evening of August 27.

The flight 656 was on its way from Toronto to Varadero, Cuba, when “two unruly female passengers” caused disturbance in the flight. According to Janine Chapman, vice-president of marketing for Sunwing, “It is reported that the passengers consumed a significant quantity of their duty free alcohol purchase in the lavatory and lit a cigarette, triggering the smoke detector alarm…These passengers proceeded to get into a physical altercation with each other and made a threat against the aircraft, which was considered non-credible given their condition.”

The pilot reported the situation to the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) which then sent 2 Canadian Forces CF-18 fighters from CFB Bagotville, Quebec, to escort the flight back to Pearson airport. Chapman said, “Our flight crew followed the appropriate procedures and the aircraft was diverted back to Toronto where it has now landed.”

The two passengers were arrested by the police. They are facing charges of smoking on board an aircraft, endangering safety of an aircraft, mischief endangering safety, and uttering threats.

The flight was preparing to take off for Cuba late night on Wednesday.

What: Southwest Airlines en route from New Orleans to Houston
Where: HOUSTON, TEXAS at Hobby Airport
When: May 12 Tuesday evening 8 pm
    Who: 47 passengers 5 crew
Why: When a tire caught on fire after landing at Hobby Airport in Houston Texas, passengers debarked via emergency slide and waited on the runway for transport to the terminal. Several injuries were sustained on the slide. The fire occurred apparently because of a flat incurred on landing.

    George’s Point of View

I know it’s unfair to pick on airline company that has gone way out on the limb to keep the price of flying low and fair, but, maintenance is a must, there can’t be any cost-savings in maintenance.

    Including the tires!

Lion Air is working with Jasa Raharja, an Indonesian insurance company to cover the medical bills for five injured passengers. The insurance company is paying up to IDR 25 million ($2500) and the airline is covering anything in excess of that.

Unofficial reports state the plane was flying low.

Twenty-five people have yet to receive their compensation.

The alcohol and drug tests of the crew, cockpit voice recorder, and the flight data recorder are still in process. No conclusions have been public on the cause of the accident.
