Pilots Blamed in Aires Crash

What: Aires Boeing 737-700 en route from Bogota to San Andrés Island Colombia
Where: Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport on the Colombian island of San Andres
When: August 15 2010, 2:15 a.m.
Who: 131 aboard, 6 crew, 4 minors, 121 adult passengers
Why: Prior to touchdown, the plane was struck by lightning (11 strikes recorded within 6 miles of the runway within a five-minute span of the crash)

According to Colombian media sources, Colombian aviation inspectors blame the pilot for not “adjusting” to flying in the high wind due to flying in too low an altitude.

The plane crashed and broke into three pieces. 115 were injured and one died; Maria Camila Angarita was a second casualty when she died in the hospital.

    India: Nose Gear Steering Failure on landing

    What: Malaysia Airlines Airbus A330-200 en route from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia to Chennai
    Where: Chennai
    When: Nov 10th 2009
    Who: 190 passengers
    Why: After a safe landing, the nose gear steering failed, so that the Airbus had to be towed. No injuries.

    Pratt & Whitney Test Jet Makes Emergency Landing in Montreal

    PrattA test jet belonging to Pratt & Whitney had to make an emergency landing in Montreal, due to engine fire.

    The Boeing 747, with four regular engines and one test engine, took off from Mirabel Airport, located around 50 kilometers north of Montreal. Shortly after the take off, the flight crew noticed the fire and requested emergency landing.

    The plane made an uneventful emergency landing at about 11:16 am on April 29 and all 14 people onboard were evacuated safely.

    According to a spokesperson for Aéroports de Montréal, François Asselin “The 747 took off with a test engine aboard at about 10:35 a.m. this morning, and there was the beginning of a fire on takeoff. The fire was put out quickly and the plane landed at 11:16 a.m. without (further) incident.” He further said “We were told there was a problem with the engine, so we deployed the appropriate (safety) measures.”

    However, the spokesperson of  Pratt & Whitney Canada, Nancy German said there is no evidence which shows that the test jet landed due a engine fire. According to her, “the control tower saw something abnormal. I can’t say what….They advised the pilots that according to them, there was something abnormal and the pilots decided to return to base…..But there was no fire or any emergency procedures. No emergency was declared”.

    Cessna Down in Yaracuy

    Where: Pueblo Nuevo, municipio Veroes, Yaracuy, Venezuela
    When: Dec 11, 2009
    Who: 4 on board
    Why: Friday, the Cessna had been seen flying low over a clandestine airstrip, allegedly used for drug trafficking. The Yaracuy state Special Action Squad discovered the plane whose identification numbers had been tampered with. The area was cordoned off and a gun battle occurred. Four or five individuals were in the plane, and drums of chemicals which are currently being analyzed.

    CEO Dies in Venezuelan Plane Crash

    What: Beechcraft BE-36 Bonanza en route from Miami to Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais
    Where: Venezuela
    When: 6 p.m. Brasilia time on July 11
    Who: Mauricio Lustosa de Castro, CEO of Magnesita Refratorios SA
    Why: Mauricio Lustosa de Castro’s private plane was last heard from in a distress call in Bolivar. Following the distress call a search and rescue began around July 13, though the incident was deemed a fatal crash on July 11.

    Qantas Airbus Blocks Runway

    What: Qantas Airbus A380 en route from LA to Sydney
    Where: New Caledonia’s La Tontouta airport
    When: August 11, 2010
    Why: Forced to land because of the bad weather, the plane was actually too big to turn on the runway, so it had to sit on the tarmac blocking traffic until it was towed.
