    United Airlines Plane Returns to London due to Electrical Issue

    United airlines

    United Airlines flight UA-935 had to return and make an emergency landing at Heathrow Airport, London, at around 12:33 P.M. on August 7th.

    The Boeing 777-200 had to return after the pilot noticed sparks and smoke in cabin due to an electrical issue.

    The plane was heading towards Los Angeles International Airport, California, at the time.

    The aircraft landed uneventfully. All 265 passengers and 14 crew members aboard remained safe.

    American Airlines SF-Hawaii Diverts to LAX

    What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from San Francisco,CA to Honolulu,HI
    Where: San Francisco
    When: Dec 6th 2010
    Who: 98 passengers
    Why: The plane took off successfully but developed a bleed air problem in the left engine. The bleed air issue is more routine than problematic but dealing with it is certainly a best practice; the crew had to burn off fuel to land, and circled; but then diverted to LAX for the maintenance facilities. On arrival to LAX, passengers were booked onto alternative flights.

    Boeing and United Airlines Finalize

    United to expand international service with fuel-efficient Dreamliner
    Boeing (NYSE: BA) and United Airlines (Nasdaq: UAUA) have finalized an order for 25 787-8 jetliners. The agreement includes the opportunity to purchase another 50 Dreamliners.

    “Boeing and United Airlines share an 80-year partnership,” said Jim Albaugh, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “United, which launched the Boeing 777, now begins a new chapter with the 787 Dreamliner, the most technologically advanced commercial jetliner ever built.”

    The order is valued at $4.2 billion at average list prices.

    “United’s Boeing 787 order represents a substantial investment in our future and will enhance the significant progress we are making in improving the global competitiveness of our company while providing the opportunity to open new profitable markets and serve a broader range of international destinations,” said John Tague, president of United Airlines.

    United expects to take delivery of the 787s at the same time it will begin to retire its Boeing 747s and 767s operating on international routes.

    The 787 Dreamliner, currently in flight test, will provide greater fuel efficiency, allowing airlines to add new, nonstop city pairs and the additional frequencies that passengers prefer.

    The 787 also promises a more comfortable flying experience for passengers. Its innovations include a new interior environment with improvements in air filtration, higher cabin pressurization resulting in reduced physical fatigue, larger windows, more stowage space, improved lighting and other passenger-preferred conveniences.

    The technologically advanced 787 will also provide airlines with up to 45 percent more cargo revenue capacity

    Including United Airlines, 57 customers around the world have ordered 876 Dreamliners, making the 787 the fastest-selling new commercial jetliner in history.

    Before Crash, Asiana Airlines Told to Revamp


    Asiana Flight 214 clipped a sea wall with its tail as it came in to land at the US airport and skidded out of control before catching fire at San Francisco’s international airport on July 6, killing three people and injuring dozens. Two months prior to the accident, South Korea’s transport ministry had requested Asiana Airlines Inc. to review safety measures.

    On April 30, the Korean government told Asiana to hire more pilots, engineers and cabin crew, to centralize its safety management system and to set up oversight for aircraft maintenance.

    Had Asiana complied with this directive? Did Asiana have adequate training for new pilots? Was the PIC aware of the situation of the SF airport? – South Korea’s Asiana Airlines will be subject of a three-week government investigation. These are some of the questions that the investigation should be covering.

    Air New Zealand Expands Use of Boeing 777 Component Services Program

    Long-term agreement adds Boeing 777-300ERs to coverage

    SEATTLE, Feb. 1, 2011 – Boeing Air France Industries KLM Engineering & Maintenance and Air New Zealand today said an agreement has been signed to expand the airline’s use of the 777 Component Services Program (CSP), offered jointly by Boeing and Air France Industries KLM Engineering and Maintenance. 

    After gaining experience with the CSP on its 777-200ER (extended range) fleet, Air New Zealand is expanding the support for common parts to cover its fleet of 777-300ERs. These parts will be added to the existing 777 CSP agreement. The airline accepted the first of its five 777-300ERs in December 2010.

    The program allows airlines to outsource the cost and logistical challenge of keeping important parts on hand. It significantly reduces the airline’s up-front investment in spare parts and offers a reliable supply of critical parts. They also benefit by receiving a working component more quickly, rather than having to wait for a completed repair that could ground an airplane.

    “For the past four years the 777 Component Services Program has operationally been highly successful on our 777-200ER fleet, so it is natural to expand it to include our new 777-300ERs,” said Vanessa Stoddart, group general manager, Technical Operations and People, Air New Zealand. “The -300ER’s longer range make the need for this component availability even more critical.”

    "Air New Zealand, with its unique location and route structure, requires a great airplane operating at the top of its performance capability," said Dale Wilkinson, vice president of Material Services for Commercial Aviation Services, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “The 777 Component Services Program will help provide that edge.”

    “Air New Zealand has chosen a program that has demonstrated its relevance to customer expectations. Since it’s been launched, the 777 CSP is indeed the favorite program for 777 operators,” said Robert Anton, senior vice president, Components Services, Air France Industries.

    Thirteen 777 customer airlines participate in the CSP, with a total of 135 aircraft currently operating under the program.

    The 777 CSP program is offered jointly by Boeing and AFI KLM E&M, who also offer a similar program for Next-Generation 737 models.

    Boeing Delivers First 737-800 Boeing Sky Interior to China


    SEATTLE, Feb. 1, 2011 — Boeing and Air China today celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first Next-Generation 737-800 with the innovative Boeing Sky Interior. With this new addition in its fleet, Air China has become the first Chinese airline to operate the 737-800 with the new Boeing Sky Interior, offering passengers an enhanced onboard experience with larger stowage bins and sculpted sidewalls, a LED lighting system with cove lighting and curved architecture and more intuitive passenger service units.

    Boeing Sky Interior is the latest in a series of improvements to the Next-Generation 737. The next to come will be a package of performance improvements that will reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 2 percent – making the airplane a full 7 percent more efficient than the first Next-Generation 737s delivered. The performance improvements to the airframe and engine are in certification test, and will be phased into production between mid-2011 and early 2012.

    To date, 60 customers have ordered the new interior for 1,689 airplanes.
