    JetBlue Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Boston

    JetBlue flight B6-1095 had to return and make an emergency landing in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 6th.

    The Airbus A320-200 plane took off for Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, but had to turn back after a foul odor was noticed on-board, causing passengers and crew members to feel sick.

    The plane landed safely. Medical teams examined several passengers at the airport.

    Where: Midway between Rome and Palermo
    When: Oct 24th 2009
    Who: n/a
    Why: While en route, the weather radar failed. The crew decided to return to Rome where they made a safe landing. Passengers were provided another plane 3 hours later.

    Transavia Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

    Transavia flight HV-5022 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on October 14th.

    The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Malaga, Spain, to Rotterdam, Netherlands, was diverted due to an issue with the flaps.

    The plane landed safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Tenerife Tail Strike

    What: TUIFly Boeing 737-800 en route from Tenerife Sur Reina Sofia, Spain to Frankfurt Germany
    Where: Tenerife
    When: Mar 27th 2011
    Why: On the runway, the Boeing and struck its tail and rejected takeoff. There was substantial damage to the plane. Passengers disembarked after the pilot told them there was a fault in the instruments. We can only speculate: There is some disagreement whether this was due to instrumentation, poorly balanced load or human error.

    Saudi Arabian Airlines Engine Shut Down

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from London to Jeddah Saudi Arabia
    Where: Rome
    When: Apr 6th 2011
    Who: 232 passengers
    Why: While en route, an engine developed problems and was shut down. The pilots diverted to Rome and made a safe landing. The engine indicated that it was overheated; but the mechanism was faulty. Repairs were performed, after which the flight was continued.

    Air France Bomb Threat on Rio/Paris Flight

    What: Air France Boeing 747-400 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris
    Where: Atlantic
    When: July 10, 2010
    Who: 405 passengers and 18 crew
    Why: While en route, the crew was radioed that a woman had called Galeao Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport with information about a bomb aboard the flight. The flight diverted to Recife Brazil and made an emergency landing. Passengers immediately disembarked and were searched. The plane and baggage were inspected for bombs and explosives. Nothing was found.

    The airline reports that they will provide hotel accommodations for passengers. When (if) the plane is cleared, it will be allowed to continue.

    The Air France Flight 447 designation has been suspended since the Air France Airbus crashed on June 1 2009. This flight was designated AF 443.
